Joshua Paul Bates (born 1 February 1996) is a British speedway rider. [1]

Early career

Born in Barnsley, Bates had never been on any type of motorbike until the beginning of 2010, when he got his first 125cc speedway bike. After a few months of practicing on this he was ready for a 250cc, which he got in June 2010. After a few more months of practice he entered the 2011 250cc British Championship, where he finished 4th overall. As well as competing in the British championship he rode in the amateur summer championship at Scunthorpe which he won and he also competed in the 250cc world championship in Sweden.

Career

In January 2012, he started riding a 500cc for the first time, soon after he was offered a team place by the Mildenhall Fen Tigers. [2] He suffered a broken arm in a crash in August 2012, [3] but made a successful return from injury and helped the Fen Tigers complete the National League "Grand Slam" that year. [4]

In 2013 he was signed by Scunthorpe Scorpions to ride in the Premier League. [5] In 2014, he won the British Under-21 Championship. [6]

He rode for both the Wolverhampton Wolves and the Sheffield Tigers in 2015 and Sheffield and Coventry Storm in 2016. He also won the British Under-21 Championship for a second time in 2016 and reached the final of the World U21 Championship. For the 2017 season he remained at Sheffield for the third season running and joined Leicester Lions.

His career suffered after a crash at Peterborough in 2019. He returned for the 2021 season as a reserve rider at Sheffield and a team rider for Leicester. [7]

The SGB Championship 2019 is the second division of Great British speedway. The season runs between March and October 2019 and consisted of 12 participating teams. The current league champions are the Workington Comets who completed an excellent 2018 season winning three major trophies. Four new teams joined the SGB Championship in 2019 with two of them dropping down from the 2018 SGB Premiership league season these teams were Leicester Lions and Somerset Rebels with Ipswich Witches and Peterborough Panthers moving in the opposite direction. Two teams from the third tier of British speedway the National League Birmingham Brummies and Eastbourne Eagles moved up into this season's league while the Lakeside Hammers did not compete.

The National League speedway 2019 now known as the National Development League for the 2019 season was the third tier/division of British speedway. There were several team changes for the 2019 league season with reigning league champions and KO cup winners Eastbourne Eagles, along with the Birmingham Brummies, moving into the SGB Championship. Coventry Bees, who rode their home meetings at Leicester the previous season, did not enter the league, but Leicester Lions entered a team. Cradley Heathens fully entered the league after the previous season National Trophy only commitment, while the Buxton Hitmen decided not compete and only run open meetings (friendlies). It was announced on Tuesday 10 September before the end of the 2019 National Development League season that Stoke Potters' home venue at Loomer Road Stadium had been sold and that the team would not be operating in 2020.
