Joyce Linehan worked as Chief of Policy for then-Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh. She previously managed rock bands and a record label. She was born and lives in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Joyce Linehan is the daughter of John J. Linehan and Yvonne Linehan. As a Dorchester native, Linehan graduated from the Notre Dame Academy and the University of Massachusetts Boston where she received her bachelor's degree in Media and American Popular Culture and a Masters in American Studies. She received the Dr. Robert W. Spayne Research Grant for study at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her master's thesis — The Day My Mama Socked it to the Harper Valley PTA: Country Music Womanhood in the Second Wave of Feminism — received the American Studies Book Award from UMass Boston. [1]
Linehan first worked in Boston's underground rock scene, booking bands into small local clubs. Eventually this led her to becoming a manager. She managed the Smithereens, Six Finger Satellite and the Lemonheads.
In the 1990s, Linehan took a job as promotions director and talent scout at Sub Pop, a Seattle label that was later acquired by Warner Brothers and launched the grunge band Nirvana into mainstream stardom. Linehan's Dorchester home served as the East Coast offices of Sub Pop.
When Linehan left Sub Pop, she became the manager of the Pernice Brothers. Linehan and Joe Pernice later decided to create their own label, called Ashmont Records. Their label released numerous records including Yours, Mine and Ours, by the Pernice Brothers, released in 2003. The two also co-wrote the book Pernice to Me: a chronicle of disagreements between Linehan and Pernice, most of which has appeared on Twitter. [2]
She owned a house on Burt Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts, which the Phoenix once called the "most famous and best-loved rock-and-roll crash pad in Boston history." Bikini Kill, Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, the Jesus Lizard, and Stereolab all stayed there over the years. [3]
Linehan was the President of Ashmont Media, a public relations company that specializes in the development of media campaigns for arts and culture groups in the Boston area. Some of her clients include ArtsEmerson, Fruitlands Museum, Handel & Haydn Society and Institute of Contemporary Art. [4] She is also the founder of the Dorchester Arts Collaborative.
In 2000 Linehan began to engage in politics in addition to the arts. She helped out in many campaigns including John Kerry's 2004 Presidential Election and Elizabeth Warren's run for U.S Senate in 2012. Linehan took part in all campaigns as a volunteer until she took the job as Chief of Policy in 2014 for Mayor Walsh. She volunteered with Marty Walsh's mayoral campaign before being appointed as his Chief of Policy. [3]
Linehan is an animal advocate and leader in the fight to end breed-specific legislation; and serves on the board of Interim House, a residential substance abuse treatment center. [1]
In 2012, she received an Unsung Heroine of Massachusetts award from the Massachusetts Commission of the Status of Women. She has also been honored by The Irish Echo for her commitment to working people, and by Company One for her commitment to theater. She is a lifelong resident of Dorchester. [1]
Dorchester is a Bostonian neighborhood comprising more than 6 square miles (16 km2) in the City of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Originally, Dorchester was a separate town, founded by Puritans who emigrated in 1630 from Dorchester, Dorset, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This dissolved municipality, Boston's largest neighborhood by far, is often divided by city planners in order to create two planning areas roughly equivalent in size and population to other Boston neighborhoods.
Jale was a Canadian alternative rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Contemporaries of Sloan and The Super Friendz, they formed in 1992 and was part of the Halifax Pop Explosion scene in the 1990s. They released three records as a band before disbanding in 1996.
Scud Mountain Boys are an American alternative country band. Formed in 1991 in Northampton, Massachusetts, it comprised Joe Pernice, Stephen Desaulniers, Bruce Tull and Tom Shea. Stephen Desaulniers left the band and was replaced by Frank Padellaro in October 1996.
Pernice Brothers are an American indie rock band. Formed by Joe Pernice in 1998 after the breakup of his old band, the Scud Mountain Boys, and including Joe's brother Bob Pernice, the band recorded their first album, Overcome by Happiness, for Sub Pop in 1998. After a three-year hiatus, Pernice Brothers returned in 2001 with The World Won't End; after parting with Sub Pop, the album was released on Pernice's own label, Ashmont Records, co-owned with his long-time manager Joyce Linehan, which in 2003 released Yours, Mine and Ours. After a 2004 tour, the band released their first live album in early 2005, Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening, and, in June of the same year, released their fourth studio album, Discover a Lovelier You. The band released Live a Little, their fifth studio album, in October 2006. Goodbye, Killer was released in June 2010, after which the band did not release another album until 2019's Spread the Feeling. The band's songs are characterized by lilting melodies and intelligent lyrics.
Yours, Mine & Ours is the third studio album by American indie rock band Pernice Brothers. It was released by Ashmont Records on May 20, 2003. It peaked at number 34 on the UK Independent Albums Chart. In 2009, Sherwin-Williams used "The Weakest Shade of Blue" in its ad campaign.
Joseph T. Pernice is an American indie rock musician and writer, who has fronted several bands, including the Scud Mountain Boys, Chappaquiddick Skyline, The New Mendicants and the Pernice Brothers.
Charlotte Golar Richie serves as the senior vice president for public policy, advocacy and government relations for YouthBuild USA. She formerly served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and held other government positions. She was a candidate for the mayor of Boston in the 2013 election, placing third in the nonpartisan primary election.
The 2013 Boston mayoral election occurred on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Incumbent mayor Thomas Menino had declined to run for re-election to a sixth term. A non-partisan preliminary election was held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. 12 candidates made the ballot to replace Menino, with state representative Marty Walsh and at-large city councilor John R. Connolly advancing to the general election. Walsh was elected to his first term, defeating Connolly by 3% of the vote, and was inaugurated on Monday, January 6, 2014.
Martin Joseph Walsh is an American politician and trade union official who served as the mayor of Boston from 2014 to 2021 and as the 29th United States Secretary of Labor from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Walsh resigned from his position as the US Secretary of Labor in March 2023 in order to accept a position as executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association. Before his mayoralty, he served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 13th Suffolk district from 1997 until 2014. As a trade union member, Walsh worked his way up to serve as the head of the Boston Building Trades Council from 2011 until 2013.
John F. Barros is an American politician, businessman, and civic organizer who was formerly the chief of economic development for the City of Boston. He also served as the executive director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Boston in 2013 and 2021. He is currently the managing principal for the Boston office of the real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield.
Michelle Wu is an American politician serving as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, since 2021. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council, from 2014 to 2021, and acted as its president from 2016–2018. She is the first woman and first non-white person to have been elected mayor of Boston. Wu is a member of the Democratic Party.

Andrea Joy Campbell is an American lawyer and politician who is serving as the attorney general of Massachusetts. Campbell is a former member of the Boston City Council. On the city council, she represented District 4, which includes parts of Boston's Dorchester, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain, and Roslindale neighborhoods. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected to the council in November 2015 and assumed office in January 2016. She served as president of the council from January 2018 until January 2020. Campbell unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Boston in 2021, placing third in the nonpartisan primary election behind Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu, the latter of whom would go on to win the general election.

Annissa Essaibi George is an American politician who served as an at-large member of the Boston City Council. First elected in 2015, she served on the council from 2016 to 2022. She was a candidate in the 2021 Boston mayoral election. She placed second in the nonpartisan primary, but was defeated in the general election by fellow city councilor Michelle Wu. Since November 2022, Essaibi George has served as the president of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit organization Big Sister Boston.
Kim Michelle Janey is an American politician and community organizer who served as acting mayor of Boston for eight months in 2021. She served as president of the Boston City Council from 2020 to 2022, and as a member of the council from the 7th district from 2018 to 2022. As a black woman, her tenure as acting mayor made her the first woman and the first person of color to lead the city.
The 2021 Boston mayoral election was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, to elect the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts. Incumbent mayor Marty Walsh was eligible to seek a third term. However, he resigned as mayor on March 22, 2021, after being confirmed as secretary of labor in the Cabinet of Joe Biden. This left the Boston City Council president, at the time Kim Janey, to hold the role of acting mayor until the victor of the election would take office.
