Joyce Omondi is a Kenyan gospel singer and media personality. [1]

Early life and education

Omondi was born in Nairobi and where she studied before proceeding to Knox College [2] in the United States from 2006 to 2010 where she majored in both Economics and Integrated International Studies. She was a Sophomore Senator and a Knox Ambassador while in college. [3]

She learnt to sing and play the piano, and started performing early in life at church gatherings in Woodley, Nairobi and later graduated to singing in the Church choir. In Knox College she was part of the Harambee Choir.

Music career

On returning to Kenya, Omondi released a series of gospel singles and collaborations including Conqueror [4] and Kweli [5] (English: "Truly"). Kweli is one of her most popular hits and was dedicated to her father who survived the 1998 bomb blast at the American Embassy in Nairobi. [6]

Omondi is a co-host of the Rauka Gospel Music show on Citizen TV in Kenya. She quit the show in 2013 to pursue a master's degree in International Development at the Georgetown University in Washington.

In 2013 she won the Groove Awards for Video of the Year category. [7]

Marriage

She married Citizen TV News Anchor Waihiga Mwaura in 2018. [8]

Dr Mbuvi is a Kenyan award-winning contemporary gospel singer, comedian, and TV presenter. Born Victor Mbuvi, he drew his love for music from his childhood and inspiration from his mother who died in 1999, a year before Dr Mbuvi launched his music career. Dr Mbuvi joined a group called His Image, who performed a cappella and various renditions of other artistes’ works. We even modernised a Luo gospel folk song Niwara Nono. In 2001, he briefly teamed up with music producer R Kay and a friend to form Injili Group, which recorded Nisamehe – his first ever hit song.

George Lubega Timothy is a Ugandan singer known by his stage name Exodus. He made his musical debut in 2008 with his hit single "Ganja Man".

"Preachers" is a Ghanaian gospel group. The group is made up of three members, Obed Psych, Emani Beats and Edmund Baidoo. Since 2009, as pacesetters of the urban gospel movement in Ghana, they have toured locally and internationally to preach the word of God through their music. Preachers are notable pioneers of urban gospel/hiphop genre in Ghana and continue to set the pace for the new generation of gospel music.

Linet Munyali, professionally known as Size 8, is a Kenyan singer, songwriter and actress. Formerly a secular artist, Size 8 is known for her singles "Shamba Boy" and "Moto". In April 2013, she released her first gospel single "Mateke". As an actress, she had a small role in the legal comedy Mashtaka.

Odi pop is a Kenyan music style which involves localized hip hop and draws influences from reggae and Dancehall music to build on an African Rhythm base performed in sing-along rap in heavy Kiswahili/Sheng language. There are several sub-genres stemming from this umbrella term including Gengeton, Dabonge, Debe and others. The music is spearheaded by Kenyan youths and most of them are pursuing their careers as music groups opposed to solo careers.

Esther and Ezekiel Muteesasira are a Ugandan sibling singing duo who won the first season of East Africa's Got Talent in October 2019, at the ages of 14 (Esther) and 11 (Ezekiel).

Waihiga Mwaura is a Kenyan journalist and BBC News presenter. He has presented the BBC News Focus on Africa programme since 2023. He won the 2018 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award. Mwaura has previously served in various capacities on Citizen TV.
