Juan Luis de Camarena (d. 1642) was a Spanish soldier and colonial administrator who was governor of the Province of Margarita from 18 February 1638 until 1642. He died in office. [1]

Camarena was a native of Seville. [2] Capitán Juan Luis de Camarena was created sergeant-major of the military forces of Puerto Rico. On 18 February 1638 he was confirmed as Governor of the province on Margarita. [3] The previous year, his predecessor, Juan de Eulate, had authorized the strangling of sixty Dutch and French prisoners taken at forts at Moruga near Punta de Galera, Trinidad, and in Tobago. The letter appointing Camarena governor, dated 23 December 1637, enjoined him to observe secrecy about the massacre. [4]

Captaincy General of Venezuela

The Captaincy General of Venezuela, also known as the Kingdom of Venezuela, was an administrative district of colonial Spain, created on September 8, 1777, through the Royal Decree of Graces of 1777, to provide more autonomy for the provinces of Venezuela, previously under the jurisdiction of the Audiencia of Santo Domingo and then the Viceroyalty of New Granada. It established a unified government in political (governorship), military, fiscal (intendancy), ecclesiastical (archdiocese) and judicial (audiencia) affairs. Its creation was part of the Bourbon Reforms and laid the groundwork for the future nation of Venezuela, in particular by orienting the province of Maracaibo towards the province of Caracas.

Manuel de la Pila Iglesias Puerto Rican physician

Manuel de la Pila Iglesias was a Puerto Rican physician practicing in Ponce, Puerto Rico, who specialized in a half-dozen medical specialities. He founded a medical clinic in Ponce that grew into a large medical center. Pila Iglesias is considered "one of the giants of Puerto Rican medicine". Margarita Province

Juan de Eulate was a Spanish soldier who served with distinction in the Netherlands, and later was appointed Governor of New Mexico between 1618 and 1625 at a time when it was a province of New Spain. He then became Governor of the Margarita Province, based on Isla Margarita off the coast of what today is Venezuela, from 1630 to 1638 before retiring to Spain.

The 2020 United States House of Representatives election in Puerto Rico was held on November 3, 2020, to elect the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Governor, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the mayors of the 78 municipalities. Incumbent New Progressive Party resident commissioner Jenniffer González, was re-elected to a second term in office.
