The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The 1991 European Youth Olympic Days was the inaugural edition of multi-sport event for European youths between the ages of 13 and 18. It was held in Brussels, Belgium from 12 to 21 July. A total of nine sports were contested by 2084 athletes representing 33 European nations. The idea for the competition came from Jacques Rogge, an International Olympic Committee member, as the continent did not have its own multi-sport event at the time.

The Judo at the 2015 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival contest was held at the Judo Academy of Georgia in Tbilisi, Georgia on 28 July, 2015.

Gefen Primo is an Israeli judoka. She competes in the under 52 kg weight category, and won bronze medals in the 2021 World Judo Championships, 2018 European Judo Championships and 2021 European Judo Championships.

Jorre Verstraeten is a Belgian judoka. He won one of the bronze medals in the men's 60 kg event at the European Judo Championships in 2020 and 2022. He also won one of the bronze medals in the men's 60 kg event at the 2019 European Games held in Minsk, Belarus.

Lola Mansour is a Belgian professional judoka, gold medalist at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore (2010) and the European Junior Championships (2012). She is Belgian champion in her category in addition to international podiums between 2009 and 2018. Lola publishes her first novel Ceinture blanche in 2018 following an accident that interrupts her sports career. As a feminist activist, ambassador of Give and Take and co-founder of the #BalanceTonSport movement, Lola aims at the empowerment of women for a more inclusive and egalitarian society.

The Judo event at the 2022 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival was held at the Sports Park Judo arena in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, from 26 to 30 July 2022. An NOC may be represented by up to 12 athletes, given that no more than 1 of them participates in any weight class. The final day of competition featured a mixed team event.

The judo event at the European Youth Olympic Festival is a biannual judo competition organized by the European Judo Union for European judoka aged 18 and younger.
