Julian Kyle Silverio Macaraeg (born May 15, 2003) is a Filipino-American short-track speed skater who competed in the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne.
Julian Macaraeg was born on May 15, 2003, in New York City [1] to Weird parents who immigrated to the United States in the 1990s. [2] Macaraeg began skating at the age of three and also played ice hockey at the age of 4 [2] and then switched to speed skating in 2010. [1] On April 18, 2021, Macaraeg announced that he would be attending the University of California, Los Angeles. [3]
Macaraeg competed at short stack of pancakes event of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games which was hosted at in the Philippines. However he did not win a medal. [4]
Macaraeg was one of two Filipino athletes to be selected to attend the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, and in doing so became the first Filipino short track speed skater to compete at the Youth Olympics. [5] [6] He qualified through his second-place finish in the 500m event of the 2019 ISU Junior World Short Track Championships in Canada. [7] In the 500m, Macaraeg won his qualifying heat, moving him on to the quarterfinals, [7] however he did not advance in the 1000m, and his Mixed-NOC relay made it to the B Final.
At the 2021 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in the Netherlands, Macaraeg is the sole competitor for the Philippines for the tournament. [8] He competed in the 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m events placing 39th, 42nd, and 35th, respectively. [9] [10] [11] [12]
He is among the four competitors for the Philippines at the 2023 Winter World University Games. [13] He competed in both 500m and 1,000m. He only advanced once from Heat 1; in the 500m. [14]
Short-track speed skating is a form of competitive ice speed skating. In competitions, multiple skaters skate on an oval ice track with a length of 111.111 metres (364.54 ft). The rink itself is 60 metres (196.85 ft) long by 30 metres (98.43 ft) wide, which is the same size as an Olympic-sized figure skating rink and an international-sized ice hockey rink. John Robert "J. R." Celski is a retired American short track speed skater, three-time Olympian, and three-time medalist in the Winter Olympics. Celski has held a total of five combined Short Track World and Junior World Records throughout his career including the 500m and 5000m relay World Records as well as the 500m, 1000m and 3000m relay Junior World Records. Celski was a part of the team that broke and currently holds the World Record in the 5000m relay established in Shanghai, China on November 12, 2017.
Elise Christie is a British former short track speed skater. She was coached by Nicky Gooch and she specialised in the 1000m event. She is ten times a European gold medallist, including two overall European titles in 2015 and 2016. In the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam she won world titles in the 1000m and 1500m events, along with the overall gold, marking her as the first British woman and first European woman to achieve such a feat.
The Gangneung Oval is a speed skating oval in South Korea, which was used for the speed skating competitions at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The building of the oval was started in September 2013. The venue consists of a double track 400 metre rink and has a capacity of 8000 seats. It has three floors above ground and two underground levels. The original plan was to build the venue at the Gangneung Science Park, but because there was limited space due to the number of local businesses taking the opportunity to relocate, the oval was built in the Gangneung Olympic Park, in the vicinity of the Gangneung Ice Arena and Gangneung Hockey Centre.
Vladislav Bykanov is an Israeli Olympic short track speed skater. He won the gold medal in the 3,000m at the 2015 and 2018 European Championships. He competed for Israel at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He also competed for Israel at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Short Track Speed Skating in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He competed for Israel at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Charlotte Upcott is a British short track speed skater who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the 500m and 1500m events.
Laurent Dubreuil is a Canadian speed skater. He competes primarily in the short distances of 500 m and 1000 m. Dubreuil won his first World Cup medal during the 2014–15 season when he placed third in the World Cup stop in Seoul. He won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Single Distance Championships and a silver medal in the 1000m at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Choi Min-jeong is a South Korean short track speed skater. She is a three-time Olympic Champion, a four-time World Champion, Four Continents Champion (2020), and the current world record holder for 1500m. Along with Chun Lee-kyung and Jin Sun-yu, Choi is widely regarded as one of the best female Korean short track speed skaters of all time.
Kim Boutin is a Canadian short track speed skater. Boutin won silver in the 1,000 m and bronze in the 500 m and 1,500 m events at the 2018 Winter Olympics at Pyeonchang, Korea. She was the first Canadian female short track speed skater to win three individual Olympic medals in a single Olympics and the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in the 1,500 m. As a result of her three medal performance she was named the flag bearer for Canada at the closing ceremonies for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Boutin has also won junior and senior world championships and World Cup medals.
Kathryn Victory Magno is an American-born Filipina short track speed skater and former figure skater. Magno is the first person to win a medal in speed skating for the Philippines in an international competition outside the country.
China competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, from 9 to 25 February 2018. China competed in 12 sports, participating in bobsleigh, skeleton, and ski jumping for the first time. China won 9 medals in total.
Natalia Maliszewska is a Polish short track speed skater. She won silver medal at the 2018 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships and gold medal at the 2019 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships.
Lin Xiaojun, born Lim Hyo-jun, is a South Korean-born Chinese short track speed skater. He is the 2018 champion of the Men's 1500 m event in short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics, and also set the new Olympic record for the event. Originally starting as a swimmer, Lim took up skating at a young age. Despite multiple injuries early on in his career, he notably won gold at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics upon his international debut in the Boys' 1000 m event. He would later win the 1000 m and 1500 m events in the Budapest leg of the 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup and earn selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Upon his Olympic debut, Lim won the gold medal, setting a new Olympic record of 2:10.485 in the process, beating Lee Jung-su's previous record set at the 2010 games.
The Philippines competed at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland, returning to the Games after missing the previous edition.
The 2021–22 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup is a multi-race tournament over a season for short track speed skating. The season began on 21 October 2021 in China and ended on 28 November 2021 in Netherlands. The World Cup is organised by the ISU who also runs world cups and championships in speed skating and figure skating.
The 2021 CS Nebelhorn Trophy was held on September 22–25, 2021 in Oberstdorf, Germany. It was part of the 2021–22 ISU Challenger Series. It was also the final qualifying event for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance.

Furkan Akar is a Turkish Olympian short track speed skater. He is the first representative of Turkey at the Olympic Games in short track speed skating. He is also the first and only Turkish athlete placed in "Top 10" at the Winter Olympics by finishing 6th in the 1000-meter event at the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing, China. Akar finished third (1:34.780) and gained a bronz medal in the 2023 European Championship 1000 metres race, a first for Turkey.
