Julie Ann Borchers (born 1962) is an American physicist.

Education

Borchers received her B.S. in physics at the University of Dayton in 1984. She completed a Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1990. [1] Borcher's doctoral advisor was Myron Salamon. Her dissertation was titled Structural and magnetic properties of erbium thin films and Er/Y superlattices. [2]

Career and research

Borchers is part of the Neutron-Condensed Matter Science Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. [1] She works as associate director for the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) and is an instrument scientist for the polarized beam reflectometer (PBR). [1]

She acts as chair-elect for the APS Topical Group on Magnetism and its Applications (GMAG), working on bringing together students, scientists and engineers to advance the study and applications of magnetism. [3] Her term as chair-elect is May 2020 to March 2021. [4]

Awards and honours

She was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2002. [5]

She was awarded NIST 2022 Distinguished Mentoring Award. [6]

Eugene Michael Chudnovsky is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and a member of the doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate School. Chudnovsky is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), elected 1993 for "seminal contributions to random ferromagnetism, macroscopic quantum tunneling, and hexatic order in high Tc materials". He is mostly known for his work on quantum tunneling of magnetization. Chudnovsky explained magnetic avalanches experimentally observed in molecular magnets as deflagration.

Katharine Blodgett Gebbie was an American astrophysicist and civil servant. She was the founding Director of the Physical Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and of its two immediate predecessors, the Physics Laboratory and the Center for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, both for which she was the only Director. During her 22 years of management of these institutions, four of its scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2015, the NIST Katharine Blodgett Gebbie Laboratory Building in Boulder, Colorado was named in her honor.

Nivrathi Suryanarayanashastry Satya Murthy was an Indian physicist and the head of the Nuclear Physics Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Known for his research in Molecular reaction dynamics, Murthy was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to Physical Sciences in 1980.

Yuri Suzuki is a Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University. She studies novel ground states and magnetic phenomena. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an American Competitiveness and Innovation Fellow of the National Science Foundation.
