Julie Hermann is the former athletic director at Rutgers University. Prior to her selection by Rutgers, she served as executive senior associate director of athletics for the University of Louisville. [1]

Early life

As a student-athlete, Hermann was an All-Big Eight volleyball player at the University of Nebraska from 1981 to 1984 when they won four conference championships, four tournament championships, appeared in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments and earned a pair of top five finishes. [2]

Coaching career and service

Hermann opened her collegiate coaching career with the Wyoming Cowgirls, where she spent two years helping them to the NCAA Tournament and a final eight finish. She also coached at the University of Tennessee. In 1997, she was the assistant coach for USA Volleyball, helping the National Team to a silver medal. [3] She spent 16 years at the University of Louisville before being hired at Rutgers in May 2013.

Upon the announcement of her appointment as Rutgers athletic director, she received media attention for her involvement in past controversies. In 1997, Hermann was also involved in a discrimination lawsuit against the University of Tennessee in which the university's former assistant volleyball coach, Ginger Hineline, claimed Hermann discouraged her from becoming pregnant. Hineline was awarded $150,000. When confronted about controversial comments made on a wedding video, Hermann denied the existence of such a video, but soon a wedding video emerged in which Hermann joked about not wanting to have a baby in the office. [4] Players on the University of Tennessee volleyball team also accused her of abusive coaching tactics. The players had written a letter in 1996 that resulted in Hermann's resignation. [5]

On November 29, 2015, she was ousted from her job as athletic director for Rutgers University. [6]

Personal

Hermann has served on many community boards, including Frazier Rehab Institute, Metro Parks, Women 4 Women, YMCA, the Louisville Sports Commission, the Kentucky Sports Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women and the Center for Women and Families. [7] She has served on the AVCA Hall of Fame selection committee and was the chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee. She currently serves as president of the National Association of Collegiate Women's Administrators. [8]

Hermann and her partner, Leslie Danehy, have one son. [9]

After her retirement from coaching she was an associate professor with the sport management program at Florida State University until August, 2015. She also served as an interim assistant athletic director and senior women's administrator at Florida State University from 1994-95. She has served as a television color analyst for collegiate volleyball matches on ACCN, Fox Sports Net South, Sunshine Network and ESPN.

Lisa Love is an American former volleyball coach and athletic director. She was the athetic director of Arizona State University. At the time, Love was one of only three female athletic directors in a Division I FBS Bowl Equity Conference of the NCAA. Love began her administrative career at USC. Prior to becoming an administrator, Love served as the volleyball head coach at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Southern California, leading her teams to the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament 13 times. In 2005, she was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame.

The University of Wisconsin–River Falls Falcons compete as members of the NCAA Division III. The athletic program has men's teams in football, basketball, ice hockey, indoor and outdoor track and field, and cross country. There are women's teams in basketball, ice hockey, indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The University recently announced it would add the sport of women's lacrosse to begin play during the 2018-2019 academic year. The Falcons on-campus facilities include the Falcon Center, which includes Hunt Arena and Page Arena, Ramer Field, and a new complex for both softball and women's soccer. They compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in all sports. The athletic director is Crystal Lanning. The Falcons team colors are red and white, and the team mascot is named "Freddy Falcon."

Chris Voelz is the executive director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards, the most prestigious national collegiate sports awards program for women since 1976. Voelz also heads her own consulting business, A+, which focuses on presentations, keynote speeches, seminars, and other educational contributions especially for or about women in sport. Voelz currently serves as an ambassador and steward for Billie Jean King’s Women's Sports Foundation.

The Michigan State Spartans women's volleyball team was founded in 1972. They play home matches at the Breslin Center, which they moved to in 2022 after playing at Jenison Fieldhouse.

Irma Garcia is the interim athletics director at Manhattan College. She previously held the same position at St. Francis College until the school disbanded its entire athletics program following the 2022–23 school year. When she took the job in 2007, Garcia was the country's first Latina athletic director in NCAA Division I sports.
