Julie Dierstein Jastrow is an American terrestrial ecologist who works at the Argonne National Laboratory. Her research considers soil and ecosystems ecology. She was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2021.
Jastrow was an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.[ citation needed ] She was a doctoral researcher at the University of Illinois Chicago, where she studied aggregate formation and stabilization in prairie soils. [1]
In 1994, Jastrow joined the Argonne National Laboratory. [2] She was made an Assistant Scientist in 1979 and Senior Scientist in 2010. [3] Her research makes use of multi-scale mechanistic studies to understand the dynamics of organic soil. She has contributed to our understanding of soil biogeochemical responses to changes in vegetation and land management. Eventually, Jastrow was appointed Lead of the Ecosystem Biogeochemistry Group in the Environmental Science Division. [2] She has served on the steering committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Frontiers in Soil Science research. [4]
Jastrow started researching permafrost soil carbon in 2012. At the time, permafrost was gaining increasing interest due to concerns about climate change. [5] Permafrost stores thousands of billions of tonnes of carbon, which is around a third of global terrestrial carbon. [6] Jastrow has studied how global warming impacts the amount of stored carbon. [6] She showed that the amount of carbon stored in permafrost exhibits a considerable spatial variability, and that cryoturbation contributes to the distribution of carbon within the soil. She combines soil measurements with high resolution digital evolution models to predict and map how carbon is distributed around soil. [6] She has studied ice-wedge polygons: area where surface soils freeze and thaw, contracting into a net of giant cracks, which, in the summer months, turn water into giant ice wedges in the permafrost underneath. [6] These polygons present some of the most under-studied soil features and can be easily studied on satellites or using remote sensing. [6]
Jastrow has studied the microbial residues within soil organic matter, and shown that they can contribute to long-term storage of carbon. [7]
Jastrow served as President of the Soil Ecology Society in 2004. [8]
In 2014, Jastrow was awarded the University of Chicago – Argonne Board of Governors Distinguished Performance Award. [2] She was named one of the United States Department of Energy Argonne Distinguished Fellow in 2020. [3] In 2021, Jastrow was made a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. [9] [10]
The permafrost carbon cycle or Arctic carbon cycle is a sub-cycle of the larger global carbon cycle. Permafrost is defined as subsurface material that remains below 0o C for at least two consecutive years. Because permafrost soils remain frozen for long periods of time, they store large amounts of carbon and other nutrients within their frozen framework during that time. Permafrost represents a large carbon reservoir that is seldom considered when determining global terrestrial carbon reservoirs. Recent and ongoing scientific research however, is changing this view.
Kathleen Kay Treseder is an American ecologist who specializes in the interplay between global climate change and fungal ecology. She also serves as a member of the Irvine City Council after being elected to the position in 2022. She is currently a professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the Ecological Society of America.
Susan E. Trumbore is an earth systems scientist focusing on the carbon cycle and its effects on climate. She is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry and a Professor of Earth System Science at University of California, Irvine. She is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Medal.
Susan M. Natali is an American ecologist. She is the Arctic program director and senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center, where her research focuses on the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems, primarily on Arctic permafrost. She is also the project lead for Permafrost Pathways, a new initiative launched in 2022 with funding from TED's Audacious Project. On Monday, April 11, 2022, Dr. Natali gave a TED Talk introducing the Permafrost Pathways project at the TED2022 conference in Vancouver, BC.
M. Francesca Cotrufo is a soil ecologist who focuses her work on litter decomposition and the dynamics of soil organic matter. She is currently a Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, as well the Senior Scientist at the Natural Resource Ecology Lab, at Colorado State University.
Susan G. Conard is an American scientist whose expertise focuses on wildland fires in Northern California and Taiga. During the 1980s and 1990s, Conard worked as a research and project leader for the United States Forest Service, publishing pieces on fire management and carbon sequestration. She is currently the editor for the International Journal of Wildland Fire.
Zoe G. Cardon is an American ecosystems ecologist focused on observing and understanding ecosystem interactions in the rhizosphere. She has also played an integral role in developing systems to better study the rhizosphere without digging it up and interfering with the ecosystems using stable isotopes and mathematical modeling. Cardon is currently a senior scientist at the Marine Biology Laboratory at the Ecosystems Center and an adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown University. She is credited with helping to establish the National Microbiome Initiative at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, D.C.
Nancy Collins Johnson is an American earth scientist who is the Regents’ Professor and Director of the School of Earth Sciences & Environmental Sustainability at Northern Arizona University. Her work considers soil microbial ecology and the study of mycorrhizal fungi. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2020.
Jennifer B. H. Martiny is an American ecologist who is a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Her research considers microbial diversity in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. In 2020 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Jennifer Harden is geologist known for her research on soils, particularly tracking changes in soil profiles over time and the role of soil systems in carbon and nitrogen cycling.
Merritt Turetsky is an American ecosystem ecologist and a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. She serves as Director of the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). Her research considers fire regimes, climate change and biogeochemical cycling in Arctic wetlands. Turetsky is a member of the Permafrost Action Team (SEARCH), a group of scientists who translate and deliver science to decision-makers.
Jennifer Pett-Ridge is an American biologist who is a senior staff scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Merced. Her research makes use of systems biology and geochemistry to uncover function in microbial communities.
