Juoksija (meaning Runner in English) is a Finnish language sports magazine which focuses on endurance sports, fitness, healthy living and running. [1] Founded in 1971, the magazine is one of the earliest publications in this category in Europe. [1]

History and profile

Juoksija was launched in 1971, and the first issue appeared on October that year. [2] [3] The founders are Finnish brothers Tapio and Heikki Pekola. [2] [4] The magazine is published ten times per year. [1]

Tapio Pekola served as the editor-in-chief of Juoksija until 1998 who remained in the editorial board of the magazine until 2008. [2] Another editor-in-chief was Ari Paunonen. [2]

Juoksija sold 20,537 copies and had 72,000 readers in 2017. [3]

Bronisław Malinowski was a Polish track and field athlete, who is best known for winning a gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase race during the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, Soviet Union and the silver four years earlier in Montreal. Olaf Beyer is a retired East German 800 metres runner.

Agberto Conceição Guimarães is a former Brazilian middle distance runner who competed at the international level in the 1980s. He set a personal best 800 metres time of 1:43.63 min in Koblenz 1984, a performance which made him temporarily the second-fastest South American 800m runner ever.

Hennadiy Valentynovych Avdyeyenko is a retired high jumper who represented the USSR and later Ukraine. He trained at the Armed Forces sports society in Odessa. He won gold medals at both the Olympics and the World Championships.

Venanzio Ortis Italian long-distance runner

Venanzio Ortis is an Italian retired long-distance runner who won two medals at the 1978 European Championships.

Christoph Herle is a retired West German long-distance runner who specialized in the 10000 metres and cross-country running. His first major international track race occurred in the 1978 European Athletics Championships in Prague, former Czechoslovakia, where he placed fourteenth in the 5,000-metre final. He ran slightly better in the 1982 European Athletics Championships 5,000-metre final in Athens, Greece, placing thirteenth. Herle ran best in 1983 and 1984, placing eighth at the 1983 World Athletics Championships 10,000-metre final in Helsinki, Finland, and fifth at the 1984 Summer Olympics 10,000-metre final in Los Angeles, the United States. He never managed to rise to the very top of international long-distance runners, however. His final major international championships race was the 1986 European Athletics Championships 10,000-metre race in Stuttgart, then West Germany, where he placed a disappointed fifteenth.

The men's javelin throw event at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union had 18 competitors in one qualifying group. The qualifying round was staged on July 26, with the automatic qualifying mark set at 80.00 metres (262.47 ft). Twelve advanced to the final, which took place the following day.

Aleksandr Kharlov is a retired hurdler from the Soviet Union, best known for winning the bronze medal at the inaugural 1983 World Championships in the men's 400 m hurdles.

The men's 5000 metres at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was held in Prague, then Czechoslovakia, at Stadion Evžena Rošického on 31 August and 2 September 1978.

Anatoliy Vasilyevich Solomin is a former Soviet Ukrainian race walker. Solomin competed in men's 20 km walk at the 1980 Summer Olympics and contended for the gold medal, but was disqualified from the lead shortly before the finish. He was European indoor champion in men's 5000 m walk in 1983 and briefly held the 20 km world best. He was born in Komarovka in Penza Oblast.

Kim Won-kwon, also romanized as Kim Won-gwon, is a Korean former long jumper and triple jumper. Kim was the world's leading triple jumper during the early 1940s and competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics.

Grigoriy Grigoryevich Degtyaryov was a Soviet Russian decathlete. Degtyaryov won gold medals at the 1984 Friendship Games and the 1986 Goodwill Games and was ranked in the world's top 10 in every year from 1982 to 1986. As of 2015, his personal best of 8698 points remains the Russian national record.

ET-lehti is a Finnish language general interest magazine targeting senior people and is published in Tampere, Finland. The magazine has also a Swedish edition.

Detlef Wagenknecht German middle-distance runner

Detlef Wagenknecht is a German former middle-distance runner. Representing East Germany, he was a finalist in men's 800 metres at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1982 European Championships and placed third at the 1981 IAAF World Cup.

Bo Eric Michael Josjö is a Swedish former sprinter. He was an eight-time Swedish champion and held the Swedish record for the men's 400 metres from 1981 to 2001. He represented Sweden at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics and the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Esa Markku Juhani Utriainen is a Finnish former javelin thrower. He was Finnish champion in 1979 and placed 12th in the 1983 World Championships in Athletics. He remains active in the sport as a coach.

Ari Paunonen is a Finnish male former middle- and long-distance runner who competed over distances from 800 metres up to 10,000 metres. His best international performances at a major event were bronze at the 1977 European Cup and fifth at the 1983 European Athletics Indoor Championships. He was also the 1500 m silver medallist at the Nordic Indoor Athletics Championships in 1986.
