Juozas Bastys (20 November 1934 - 8 October 1994) was a Lithuanian politician and member of the Seimas.

Biography

Bastys was born to a peasant family in Naujokaičiai village, Šakiai district, Lithuania on 20 November 1934. [1]

Bastys graduated from Raudonė high school in 1953 and started working at the editorial team of a newspaper in Jurbarkas district. Between 1954 and 1961 he worked at several schools and youth organizations. In 1961 he became the Manager of Kriūkiai collective farm in Šakiai district, where he worked for the following 30 years. In 1992 he worked as the CEO of agricultural company Agrolina. [1] The company would later be headed by his son [2] and granddaughter. [3]

Bastys was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, joining Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania (LDDP) after independence. In the elections in 1992, Bastys represented LDDP and was elected as the member of the Sixth Seimas through its electoral list. [1]

Bastys died in office on 8 October 1994. [3] His son, Mindaugas Bastys would later serve as a member of the Seimas. [2]

Virgilijus Čepaitis Lithuanian publisher and translator

Virgilijus Juozas Čepaitis is a Lithuanian publisher and translator, best known for his involvement in the Sąjūdis independence movement. He was the Executive Secretary of Sąjūdis and a member of its Initiative Group. He was also a signatory of the Declaration of the Restoration of Independence of Lithuania on March 11, 1990.

Antanas Račas was a Lithuanian politician. In 1990 he was among those who signed the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania.

1992 Lithuanian parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Lithuania in two stages on 25 October and 15 November 1992. A total of 141 members were elected to the Seimas, which replaced the Supreme Council; 70 were elected using proportional representation and 71 from single-member constituencies. Where no candidate gained more than 50% of the vote on 25 October, a run-off was held on 15 November. The first round of the elections were held simultaneously with a referendum on the adoption of a new constitution.

1996 Lithuanian parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Lithuania in two stages on 20 October and 10 November 1996. All 141 seats in the Seimas were up for election; 70 based on proportional party lists and 71 in single member constituencies. Where no candidate gained more than 50% of the vote on 20 October, a run-off was held on 10 November.

Tiesa was the official daily newspaper in the Lithuanian SSR. Established in 1917, the newspaper soon became the official voice of the Communist Party of Lithuania. After the Lithuanian victory in the Lithuanian–Soviet War, the party and the newspaper were outlawed in Lithuania. Therefore, it was first printed in exile and later illegally in Kaunas. Tiesa survived irregular publishing schedules, frequent relocations, staff changes, and other difficulties and, after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in June 1940, became the official daily of the new communist regime. At its peak, its circulation exceeded 300,000 copies. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tiesa lost its official status and its circulation shrunk. The publication was discontinued in 1994.

Sixth Seimas of Lithuania

The Sixth Seimas of Lithuania was the first parliament (Seimas) elected in Lithuania after it restored independence on 11 March 1990. Elections took place on 25 October 1992, with the second round on 15 November. In a surprisingly decisive outcome, the elections were won by Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania (LDDP), with 73 seats. The result reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the economic situation and the policies of the ruling Sąjūdis political movement in the preceding Supreme Council of Lithuania.
