Justin Schembri (born 3rd March 1982) is a dynamic Maltese politician affiliated with the Nationalist Party. Elected to Parliament in the 2022 Maltese general election from District 8. Schembri's journey into politics began in 2014 when he was invited by the Party's Deputy Leader, Beppe Fenech Adami to be part of an internal Policy Forum. Recognizing his potential, in September of the same year, at the request of the then Leader of the Nationalist Party Simon Busuttil, Justin Schembri was announced as a Candidate for the General Elections on behalf of the Nationalist Party in September 2014. He addressed his first General Council on 30 November 2014 with the theme Honest Politics. He articulated his commitment to making a positive impact on the Nationalist Party, despite being relatively new to the political scene.
In 2017, he contested unsuccessfully the General Election in which he obtained more than 600 first count votes. Furthermore, in 2019 Justin Schembri was elected as Minority Leader on Birkirkara's Local Council obtaining 2,543 votes or 44.2% of the votes of the Nationalist Party which in total managed 43.67% in the locality.
On 27 July 2019, in a difficult period for the Nationalist Party, Justin Schembri addressed the Extraordinary General Council before a vote of confidence was taken in the then Party Leader Adrian Delia. [3] In his speech, Justin Schembri said that he was there to defend the legacy of democracy and the rule of law and to defend the weapon that we must humbly understand its significance. He said that "we cannot save the democracy of the country if we do not save the democracy within the Nationalist Party". He concluded by saying that anyone who really believes in democracy, should choose unity and unity, because the Nationalist Party is not the councillors but the thousands of members who have already made a democratic choice. Adrian Delia was confirmed Leader of the Party after 67% voted in favour. [4]

Cyrus Engerer is a Maltese Member of European Parliament representing the Labour Party. A gay rights activist, he was the leading spokesperson for the Yes campaign at the 2011 Maltese divorce referendum. In 2021 he was tasked with negotiating the European Parliaments historic resolution on the declaration of the European Union as an LGBTQ Freedom zone, in reaction to the establishment of so called "LGBT-Free zones" in Poland. Engerer later went on to write the European Parliaments resolution which condemned the laws in Hungary which effectively banned "LGBT propaganda" in the vicinity of schools. From 2014 till 2019 Engerer was the Prime Minister's special envoy to the European Union. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in November 2020. After he joined the Labour Party the Police of Malta opened an investigation against him, leading to his father's arrest, the opening of a court case against him on spreading pornography and the arrest of his mother on election day. He himself was convicted for spreading revenge porn and received a suspended two years term imprisonment. He is the partner of Partit Laburista's Member of Parliament Randolph De Battista.

The Democratic Party was a centrist to centre-left political party in Malta. It was founded in 2016 after a split from the Labour Party. It elected Malta's first two third party MPs for the first time since the country's Independence. In August 2020 the party announced an agreement to merge with the green Democratic Alternative party to form a new party called AD+PD. The merger was conducted on 17 October 2020.

The 2019–2020 Maltese protests started in Valletta and other urban centres of Malta on 20 November 2019, mainly calling for resignations after alleged political links to the assassination of journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia surfaced following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech. The protesters also targeted government corruption and the lack of action on money laundering. The protests consisted of demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and civil disobedience and have been unprecedented in Malta's political history since its independence from the United Kingdom.
