Juxtaposition Arts is a youth oriented non-profit visual art center in North Minneapolis, Minnesota, and it is known for community collaborations, studio classes and workshops, public mural programs, and art exhibitions.

Mission

"Juxtaposition Arts develops community by engaging and employing young urban artists in hands-on education initiatives that create pathways to self-sufficiency while actualizing creative power." [1]

Information

Juxtaposition Arts was founded in 1995 by DeAnna Cummings, her husband Roger Cummings, and Peyton Scott Russell. the organization's mission is to empower the youth and community to use the arts to actualize their full potential. [2] It originated as an after-school program teaching airbrushing and graffiti art. JXTA's youth artists work with local organizations such to learn how to make money while embracing their passions. [3]

Juxtaposition Arts provides visual arts literacy training and design based jobs for the youth in the community. This approach not only motivates the next generation of creative workers, but the production and output from these jobs that include murals, public art, graphic design, art installations, and clothing. [2] They employ 70 artists ages 14 – 22 as art apprentices and teach free art classes for students ages 8 – 22. [4]

It is in the middle of an $8.2 million, six-year expansion.

In 2019, Juxtaposition Arts partnered with City of Skate to build a "Skate-able Art Plaza" which included flexible open spaces, art installations, a skate plaza, and sustainable storm water management. [5] This project received $50,000 in funding each from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, a Kickstarter, and Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee Legacy Fund. [5] [6]

Bank of America funded both Juxtapostion Arts and Project for Pride in Living through a $400,000 grant in 2019. [4]

In September 2021, the organization broke ground on a new building on its campus in North Minneapolis. [7] In June 2023, the new building was completed and opened. [8] The new facility includes a library with public art-focused holdings from the donation of the Forecast Public Art Library. [9] It also features a stormwater retention and reuse system that was supported with funding from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization. [10]

Notable work

The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis commissioned JXTA to create a work for its building as part of the theater's anti-racism commitments. [11] The sculpture "Luminous Current" was installed in 2019 on the ninth floor of the theater and created by D’Angelo Raymond and Temesgen Besha. As artist apprentices, they worked under guidance from lead designers and architects Niko Kubota and Sam Ero-Phillips. The glowing 40-foot long aluminum sculpture's 200 pounds hangs from the ceiling and was intended to evoke the area where the theater is located between the Mississippi River and downtown Minneapolis. In 2023, JXTA collaborated with Red Wing Shoes on a capsule collection that included a limited-edition boot and a hoodie. The collection sold out, and proceeds supported programming for JXTA. The collaboration also featured a series of seven billboards in Minneapolis featuring art from apprentices, alumni, and friends of JXTA. [13] While the billboards were temporary, the art can still be seen on an online map. [14]

In May 2023, youth from Juxtaposition created a multimedia installation in the lobby of the Minnesota Orchestra's Orchestra Hall building in downtown Minneapolis as part of the world premiere of brea(d)th by Carlos Simon and Marc Bamuthi Joseph to honor the struggle for racial justice. [15]

Juxtaposition worked with the City of Brooklyn Center in 2023 on the design for a memorial to Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the city in 2021. [16]

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board worked with a group from JXTA's Environmental Design lab on a sculptural bike bridge that was installed in Hall Park in the Near North neighborhood in November 2023. [17] JXTA apprentice Isaiah Hunter's design for a community table was selected by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board for the rebuilt pavilion at Bde Maka Ska, and the wood and steel table was installed in November 2023. Hunter worked with the fabrication company, Concrete Pig, on the table. [18]

Notable alumni

Minneapolis city council member Jeremiah Ellison got his start at Juxtaposition painting murals. [19] Aaron Seymour-Anderson was an apprentice with JXTA in his youth, and in 2023 was Red Wing Shoe's head of brand and creative after working as a creative director for Nike. [20] Ameen Taahir is a multidisciplinary artist from Brooklyn Park, MN who was in the JXTA Textile Lab in 2006-07. His designs were featured on tech accessories by Target in 2023. [21]

Megan Rye is an American painter, living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), earning a BFA in Painting in 1998, with an Art History concentration. Her senior year at RISD was spent in Rome, as a participant in the European Honors Program. She was awarded an MFA in Painting from the University of Minnesota in 2003, where she received a Graduate School Fellowship. In 2005 Rye was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.

Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay is a Minnesota-based Lao American spoken word poet, playwright, and community activist. She was born in 1981 in a refugee camp in Nong Khai, Thailand. In 2020, she received a National Playwright Residency Program grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

District 202 began as a non-profit lesbian and gay youth coffee house in 1992 supported by a start-up grant from the Minneapolis Community Foundation. Over the years it evolved into a thriving LGBTQ | Queer youth community center. District 202's first hire was Michael Kaplan in 1992, who served as the center's first executive director until June 1998.

Eric Rieger, also known as HOTTEA, is a Minneapolis, Minnesota based artist. Rieger uses brightly colored yarn to design words and images on fences around Minneapolis. Originally a graffiti painter, Reiger switched to "yarn bombing" after spending time in jail for using paint. Instead of continuing on with graffiti art, Reiger studied for and received a degree in graphic design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). He graduated in 2007 and became a freelance artist.

Red Eye Theater is a multidisciplinary creative laboratory dedicated to the development and presentation of boundary-breaking performance work in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was founded in 1983 by writer/director Steve Busa, performer Miriam Must, and visual artist Barbara Abramson.

Ragamala Dance Company is an independent dance company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, at the Center for Performing Arts. It was founded in 1992 by Ranee Ramaswamy and David Whetstone. Ragamala collaborates with national and international artists of various disciplines. They perform locally in Minneapolis and on national tours around the United States, India, Europe, and other locations. Ragamala combines the extensive culture of India with the explorative, creative ethic of the United States.

Adriana Rimpel, known professionally as Lady Midnight, is an American multidisciplinary artist, vocalist, songwriter, educator and community leader based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Daunte Wright protests</span> Series of demonstrations and riots in response to a police shooting in April 2021

Protests and civil disorder occurred in reaction to the killing of Daunte Wright on April 11, 2021. Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police officer Kimberly Potter during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, United States. Protests that first began in Brooklyn Center spread to other locations in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area and then to other cities in the United States. Several nights of civil disorder in Brooklyn Center and adjacent cities resulted in sporadic looting and damage to a few hundred properties, including four businesses that were set on fire.

Ta-coumba T. Aiken is a painter and public artist who identifies his work as superlative realism. He has created over 600 murals and public art works. A mural Aiken designed in 2013 using over 596,000 Lite Brite pegs holds the Guinness World Record for the largest picture made of Lite Brite. He has also taught and curated. He is sometimes referred to as the "mayor of Lowertown" for his neighborhood presence at his longtime studio in the Lowertown Lofts Artists Cooperative in the Lowertown neighborhood in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
