K.P. Janaki Ammal

K.P. Janaki Ammal (1917-1992) was a politician from Communist Party of India (Marxist) and president of All India Democratic Women's Association. [1] She represented Madurai East in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in 1967. [2]

Early life

Born in 1917, she was the only child of Padmanabhan and Lakshmi. Her early life was spent in poverty. Her mother died when she was 8 years old, and she was raised by her grandmother. She dropped out of school in the eighth grade, in order to pursue music. She Palaniappa Pillai Boys Company for a salary of Rs.25 per month. She later went on to become the lead actress and earned over Rs. 300 per performance. She teamed up with S.S. Viswanathadas on stage, to engage with the issue of caste based untouchability. [2]

Janaki Ammal married a harmonium player from the troupe, Gurusamy Naidu. [2]

Career

She is known as the first South Indian woman to be arrested by the British. She was first arrested in 1930 while performing in Tirunelveli and spent one year in jail. [2] She was arrested for participating in anti- war propaganda in Trichy, under the Defence of India Rules. [1] [3]

She was one of the active political members of the Individual Satyagraha Movement. [3] In 1936, she joined Congress party and worked as the office bearer in the Madurai Congress Committee She then shifted to the Congress Socialist Party. She joined Communist Party of India in 1940. After the party's split, she moved to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). [2]

Janaki Ammal and Ponmalai Paapa Umanath were founders of the Tamil Nadu Democratic Women's Association in 1974, where the former became its first president. [2]

Personal life

During the Emergency, she sold off her jewellery and silk clothes to raise money for food, for party cadres. [2]

Repeated arrests and never ending hard work took a toll on her health. She died of asthma on 1 March 1992. [2]

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party which has a major influence in the state of Tamil Nadu and union territory of Puducherry. It is currently the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and part of the India ruling National Democratic Alliance. AIADMK is a Dravidian party founded by M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) at Madurai on 17 October 1972 as a breakaway faction from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after M. Karunanidhi expelled him from the party for asking for accounts as party treasurer. The party is adhering to the socio-democratic and social justice principles based of C. N. Annadurai collectively coined as Annaism by M.G.R.

1991 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election Elections to the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu

The tenth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 24 June 1991. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) – Indian National Congress (INC) alliance won the elections in a landslide and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa became the chief minister. This was her first term in office. The united strength of AIADMK, the alliance with the Congress, and the wave of public sympathy in the wake of Rajiv Gandhi assassination combined to produce a massive victory for the AIADMK. The DMK could only win 2 seats. This was the worst performance of the DMK since it entered electoral politics in the 1957.

The ninth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 21 January 1989. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the election and its leader M. Karunanidhi, became the Chief Minister. It was his third term in office. The DMK was in power only for a short term, as it was dismissed on 31 January 1991 by the Indian Prime minister Chandra Shekhar using Article 356 (Otherwise) of the Indian Constitution.

1984 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election Elections to the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu

The eighth legislative assembly election for Tamil Nadu was held on 24 December 1984. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won the election and its general secretary, incumbent M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R) was sworn in as Chief Minister, for the third time. The election victory was mainly attributed to the sympathy wave created by Indira Gandhi's assassination and M.G.R's illness coupled with Rajiv Gandhi's popularity. This is the last election M.G.R contested as he died in office in 1987. This is also the only General Election which M. Karunanidhi did not contest since 1957 until his death.
