Kadak Collective is a collaborative group of female artists from South Asia, who work on graphic art projects, including zines, publications, and other forms of story-telling. Its members include filmmaker and webcomic creator Aarthi Parthasarthy, comic artist and illustrator Kaveri Gopalakrishnan.

Establishment

Kadak Collective was established at the initiative of animator and comics journalist Aindri Chakraborty, in response to a lack of representation of women, and South Asian women, at arts festivals and comic book conventions. The initial group consisted of eight artists from South Asia, apart from Chakraborty: filmmaker and webcomic creator, Aarthi Parthasarthy, artist Garima Gupta, comic artist and illustrator Kaveri Gopalakrishnan, typographer Pavithra Dikshit, graphic designer Mira Malhotra, illustrator and designer Janine Shroff, and designer and director Akhila Krishnan. [1] Later members include comic book writer Kruttika Susarla, and artists such as Rae Zachariah, Nausheed Javed, and Priya Dali. [2] The name 'kadak' means 'strong' or 'sharp' and is often used to describe South Asian masala chai. [1] [3]

Projects

Kadak Collective's first project was a collection of comic zines, prints and postcards presented at the East London Comic Arts Festival. Their work was commercially successful, with most presented art work selling out at the festival itself. [3] [4] [5] [6]

In 2016, Kadak Collective launched a project titled 'Reading Room', a travelling library and exhibit consisting of 21 titles created by members of the collective. Initially housed at the Goethe-Institut's Max Mueller Bhavan in Bengaluru, it was later presented in several locations in India as both, a physical and virtual space, with the content being hosted online as well. Many of the works including in 'Reading Room' dealt with social expectations surrounding female sexuality, as well as engaging with feminism, gender, identity, and caste in South Asia. It received positive reviews in the Indian press. [1] [7] [8] The Reading Room was presented in addition to a second project titled 'Gender Bender', which focused on gender and identity. [5] A zine created by Mira Malhotra for this project, titled 'Unfolding the Sari' received particular acclaim, with Livemint describing as a 'distinctive' examination of the Madonna-whore complex. [9]

In 2019, the collective launched Bystander, an anthology of visual art made by members of the collective, examining ideas of community and 'othering', examining the access that women have to public and private spaces as well as aspects of the Me Too movement in India. The anthology was crowd-funded and included collaborations with poets, writers, and activists. The project has received wide coverage and press, with particular note being paid to their use of digital art, including gifs, audio and animation. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

The Kadak Collective has also expressed support for political causes, including creating protest art during the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act protests, [16] [17] [18] [19] and signing a letter condemning the Delhi High Court's direction to removal all online allegations of sexual harassment against Indian artist Subodh Gupta during the Me Too movement in India. [20]

He was the founder and member-secretary of the Asian Development Research Institute in Patna, Bihar. His research was a contributor to the rollout for various state government led societal development programs and economic reforms in the state.

Webcomics have grown in popularity in India since the early 2000s. Early webcomics created by Indian people were written and illustrated by people abroad and focused primarily on the differences in culture the creators experienced. Later webcomics put a strong emphasis on social and political issues present in the country, usually from a liberal perspective. Webcomics can reach large audiences in India when shared through social media.

Shals Mahajan is a writer and queer feminist who lives in Bombay. They have been part of LABIA – Queer Feminist LBT Collective for the past two decades. Shams has worked on issues of gender, sexuality, caste and communalism as trainer, teacher and activist. They have studied literature and have conducted workshops on writing with university students, with people working in NGOs, with women returning to literacy, and queer persons.

Aarthi Parthasarathy is an Indian filmmaker and webcomic creator. Having grown up in Mumbai and living in Bengaluru, Parthasarathy is known for creating the webcomic Royal Existentials and writing for the webcomic Urbanlore. Parthasarathy became part of feminist art collective Kadak in March 2016, where she has collaborated to create Personal (Cyber) Space and Aloe Vera and The Void.

Kaveri Gopalakrishnan is an Indian independent comics maker, illustrator, and art director based in Sydney, Australia. She is most notable for her interactive illustration "On The Roof" that was featured in the Women's Day 2018 Google Doodle. The illustration depicts Kaveri's love for reading. She was one among 12 female artists featured by Google to celebrate international women's day 2018.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) was passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019. It amended the Citizenship Act, 1955 by providing an accelerated pathway to Indian citizenship for persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who arrived in India by 2014. The eligible minorities were stated as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis or Christians. The law does not grant such eligibility to Muslims from these countries. The act was the first time that religion had been overtly used as a criterion for citizenship under Indian law, and it attracted global criticism.

Priya Kuriyan is an Indian comic book writer, illustrator and animation filmmaker, based in the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka. She is the author of the comic book Ammachi's Glass, and the author of the picture book and children's adaptation of the writer Perumal Murugan's acclaimed novel Poonachi. Kuriyan was the recipient of the Big Little Book Award at the Mumbai Literature Festival in 2019.

C.G. Salamander is a writer, editor and comic journalist. He has been published by publishers such as Penguin Books, Scholastic India and Pratham Books. Some of the books written by him are Moodunnit, Puu, Yamini and the 7 PM Ghosts, Frank Goes to the Market. and City of Rubble

Janine Shroff is a London-based artist and illustrator of Indian origin. Her work explores themes of sexuality, identity, and the environment.
