Kaetu Smith is a Liberian football coach.

Career

During the 1990s, Smith managed Liberian club sides Baccus Marine and LPRC Oilers, before spending much of the 2000s coaching youth teams in the United States. [1] He was appointed as manager of the Liberian national team in May 2012. [1] Smith's appointment was criticised by George Weah, [2] comments which were played down by Smith. [3] Smith and his assistants were sacked in December 2012. [4]

LPRC Oilers is a football club from Liberia based in Monrovia. Their home stadium is the Antonette Tubman Stadium. The LPRC Oilers have been a fixture in Liberian football since the late 1980s. The team is considered one of the better squads in Liberia.

The Liberia national football team, nicknamed the Lone Stars, is the national association football team of Liberia and is controlled by the Liberia Football Association. Although the country produced the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah, they have never reached the World Cup finals. Weah has been a patron of the Liberian team; not only has he played for and coached the side, but he also sponsored the team with his own money.

George Manneh Oppong Weah is a Liberian politician and former professional footballer currently serving as the 25th President of Liberia, in office since 2018. Prior to his election to the presidency, Weah served as Senator from Montserrado County. During his football career, he played as a striker. His prolific 18-year professional playing career ended in 2003.

Elections in Liberia

Elections in Liberia occur solely at the national level. The head of state, the President of Liberia, is elected to a six-year term in a two-round system, in which a run-off between the two candidates with the highest number of votes is held should no single candidate earn a majority of the vote in the first round. The Legislature has two elected chambers.

2005 Liberian general election

The 2005 Liberian general election was held on 11 October 2005, with a runoff election for the presidency held on 8 November of that year. The presidency, as well as all seats in the House of Representatives and Senate were up for election. The election marked the end of the political transition following Liberia's second civil war and had been stipulated in the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2003. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former World Bank employee and Liberian finance minister, won the presidential contest and became the first democratically elected female African head of state in January 2006.

The Football League is contested through three Divisions: the Championship, League One and League Two. Jonathan Sogbie is a retired Liberian association football striker. At club level Sogbie played for ASEC Mimosas, Lausanne Sport, Servette Geneve, Connecticut Wolves, Rhode Island Stingrays, and Chongqing Lifan. Sogbie also played for the Liberia national team between 1990 and 1998. Since his retirement from soccer, he entered politics, and was an opponent of George Weah. He is currently the public relations manager at the National Oil Company of Liberia

The 2015–16 Football League was the 117th season of The Football League. It began on 7 August 2015 and concluded on 30 May 2016, with the League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium. The Football League was contested through three Divisions; Championship, League One and League Two. The winners of the Championship, Burnley and runner-up Middlesbrough were automatically promoted to the Premier League and on 28 May 2016 were joined by the winner of the Championship play-off, Hull City. The bottom two teams in League Two, Dagenham & Redbridge and York City, were relegated to the National League.

2017 Liberian general election

General elections were held in Liberia on 10 October 2017 to elect the President and House of Representatives. No candidate won a majority in the first round of the presidential vote, so the top two finishers — CDC standard-bearer Amb. George Weah and UP standard-bearer Vice President Joseph Boakai — competed in a run-off on 26 December. The second round was originally scheduled for 7 November, but was postponed after LP standard-bearer Cllr. Charles Brumskine, in third place, challenged the result in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court dismissed the challenge, which would have forced a re-run of the first round had it been successful, and the second round was held on 26 December. Weah emerged victorious with just over 60% of the vote.

Timothy Tarpeh Weah is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for French club Paris Saint-Germain. He also represents the United States at international level.
