Kagny and the Dirty Rats was a short-lived American rock and R&B band signed to Motown Records in the early 1980s. The group is notable for featuring musicians who would later achieve greater fame, including Steven St. James and Marq Torien (later known as Marc Torien), who would go on to front the hard rock band BulletBoys [1] [2] BulletBoys.
Kagny and the Dirty Rats formed in Los Angeles and were active during the early 1980s. The band was part of Motown's effort to diversify its roster beyond traditional soul and R&B acts. Their self-titled album, Kagny & The Dirty Rats, was released in 1983 on Motown Records. [1] [3] The project was produced by Benny Medina and Kerry Gordy (also known as Kerry Ashby), both of whom had previously been members of the Motown group Apollo (band).
The band's lineup included Steven St. James, who would go on to form Sarge with original Ratt guitarist Chris Hager, and Marq Torien (credited as Mark Torien), who contributed vocals and guitar. [2] Cliff Liles, was also a member.
Despite the Motown backing and the involvement of future stars, Kagny and the Dirty Rats did not achieve commercial success, and their tenure was brief. The band is remembered primarily for its connection to later prominent acts and its place in Motown's early 1980s experimentation with rock and funk sounds. [1] [3]

While Kagny and the Dirty Rats did not leave a significant mark on the charts, the group is of interest to collectors and music historians for its Motown pedigree and for launching the careers of musicians who would go on to greater recognition, particularly Torien.
