Kajaani Church (Finnish : Kajaanin kirkko) is a church in Kajaani, Finland. It was built in 1896 in the Neo-Gothic style by architect Jac Ahrenberg.

History

The current church replaced an earlier church on the spot which was originally built in 1656 and destroyed by the Russians in 1716 at the time when Kajaani castle was destroyed. The second church was built 1734-35 which served the parish for 160 years until replaced with Ahrenberg's new church. [1]

Architecture

The church, built of wood, has a nave flanked by two aisles and features a delicate, slender bell tower. [2] It is decorated with English Gothic style carvings. [3]

Kajaani Castle was built on the Ämmäkoski island of the Kajaani River in the centre of Kajaani, Finland, in the 17th century. Today, only roofless ruins remain of the castle. It is the last castle of the Middle Ages that was constructed in Sweden. The flourishing period was during Per Brahe the Younger reign in 1670´s when it was decided the change for the castle for the nobles but 15 years later those fiefs dismissed and the castle became an ordinary centrum of the government for the Swedish Nordic reach.

Joensuu Church is located in the centre of Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland. The church was built in 1903 and designed by a Finnish church architect Josef Stenbäck. Architecturally it represents the Gothic Revival style, but it also has some features of National Romantic style. The high tower located in the northeast corner is the bell tower and in the lower southwest tower is the organ, which was built in 1969 by Organ Factory of Kangasala and has 36 stops. The church has 1000 seats. The altar painting is called The Crucifixion of Jesus and it is painted by Ilmari Launis in 1910.
