Kalju Tonuma is an Australian music producer, songwriter, drummer and performer of Estonian descent. He is one half of the production team MEJU (pronounced "me-you") which he founded with Megan Bernard in 2014. He also manages record label Of One Kind and live-stream venue The B Side. [1] Tonuma also performs as the drummer for Anactoria, Megan Bernard and The Indulgence and Peter Farnan and The Home Bodies. [2] [3]
He began his career in 1989 at Platinum Studios in South Yarra, Australia. He has been nominated for a number of Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards. These include 'Engineer of the Year' (1994) for This Is the Sharp by The Sharp, ‘Engineer of the Year’ (1999) for Kid Indestructible by 28 Days; Felicity Hunter's "Hardcore Adore"; and The Mavis's "Puberty Song", [4] as well as ‘Engineer of the Year’ and ‘Producer of the Year’ (2001) for Superheist’s The Prize Recruit . In 2007, he completed a Master of Music Degree (M.Mus.) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Superheist is an Australian nu metal band formed in 1993. They have released two EPs, thirteen singles, one compilation/live album and five studio albums, two of which, 2001's The Prize Recruit and 2002's Identical Remote Controlled Reactions, reached the top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart. After a twelve-year hiatus, their 2016 comeback album "Ghosts of the Social Dead" reached No. 3 on the AIR Charts and remained in the Top 10 for four weeks.
The Sharp are a Melbourne four-piece pop, rockabilly band which formed in 1991 with Allan Catlin on double bass and lead vocals, Piet Collins on drums and Charlie Rooke on guitar and lead vocals. They issued two studio albums, This Is the Sharp (1993) and Sonic Tripod (1994). Their highest-charting single, "Alone Like Me" (1994), reached the ARIA Singles Chart top 20.
Deadstar were an Australian alternative rock band formed in August 1995 by Peter Jones on drums and percussion; Caroline Kennedy on lead vocals and guitar; and Barry Palmer on guitar and bass guitar. They released three studio albums, deadstar, Milk and Somewhere Over the Radio. Two singles reached the top 100 on the ARIA Singles Chart, "Run Baby Run" and "Deeper Water", both in 1999. The group were nominated for three ARIA Music Awards. The group disbanded in 2001.
Boom Crash Opera are an Australian pop rock band formed in late 1984. Initially based around the songwriting partnership of Richard Pleasance and Peter Farnan, the band was later joined by Dale Ryder (vocals), Peter ‘Maz’ Maslen (drums) and Greg O’Connor (keyboards). Pleasance developed tinnitus from constant exposure to loud live music and left in 1992 to pursue a solo career as an artist and producer. O’Connor departed in 1994.
"Crank the System" is the lead single by the Australian nu metal band Superheist from their first album The Prize Recruit. It was issued ahead of the album on 27 November 2000 on Shock Records' imprint Pivotal Records. The track was co-written by all five Superheist members and peaked at No. 45 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The album and single were produced by Kalju Tonuma.
"Bullet" is the second single from the debut album The Prize Recruit, by Australian nu metal group Superheist. It is a reworked version of "Bullet for You", a B-side from the previous single "Crank the System". It exceeds the original in quality and bombast. The Prize Recruit is the debut full-length album from Australian nu metal band Superheist. It was recorded at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne by Superheist and producer Kalju Tonuma and released on 15 April 2001. It peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2001, Tonuma was nominated for Producer of the Year and Engineer of the Year for the album.
"Step Back" / "Slide" is a double A-side single by Australian nu metal group, Superheist from their debut album, The Prize Recruit. Both tracks were co-written by Richard William "DW" Norton on lead guitar and backing vocals; Roderick "Burger" McLeod on lead vocals; and Fetah Sabawi on synthesisers and samplers. It had less chart success than the previous two singles, although it reached the top 100 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The album, including both tracks, was produced by Kalju Tonuma. The cover was a cardboard sheath over a jewel-case CD featuring a flip style alternative cover with concept art for the two A-sides. Only "Step Back" was provided with promotional music video.
Identical Remote Controlled Reactions is the second studio album by Australian nu metal group Superheist. It is the only album to feature Joey Biro as lead vocalist. The album proved far stronger than their previous album, The Prize Recruit, in song personality and overall weight in sound. Though not taken as well by critics, it was well received by the fanbase. The album itself seemed far more adventurous in sound, with short instrumental interludes included between songs and far more experimentation with keyboards and bass.
Upstyledown is the second studio album by Australian punk band 28 Days produced by Kalju Tonuma. It was released in July 2000 and debuted at No. 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts and was certified platinum.
The Mavis's are an Australian rock band formed in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1987. Founding mainstays are Becky Thomas on vocals and keyboards, her brother Matt Thomas on guitar and vocals, and Andrea Vendy on drums. They were joined by Nick Gill on guitar in 1990, and Josh Alexander on bass guitar in 1994. They released three studio albums: Venus Returning, Pink Pills – which reached No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart – and Rapture. Their synth-driven single, "Cry", peaked at No. 13 on the ARIA Singles Charts and was listed on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 1998. The band also performed the song on Hey Hey It's Saturday. They disbanded in December 2001 after a farewell tour of Australia.
The 15th Annual Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards were held on 30 October 2001 at the Capitol Theatre. Rock band Powderfinger won the most awards with six from eight nominations. Leading the nominations were dance, electronic group, The Avalanches, with nine nominations: they won four.
Venus Returning is the debut studio album by Australian pop band The Mavis's, released in May 1996 by record label Mushroom. It was produced by Kalju Tonuma. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described how it "highlighted the band's brash sound, which mixed the Thomas siblings' idiosyncratic, imperfect vocal blend, crashing guitars, sugar-frosted melodies, goofy keyboard embellishments and odd instrumentation ." "Thunder" was listed on the national youth radio Triple J audience poll, Hottest 100 of 1996, at No. 92. The album peaked at No. 76 on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart.
Pink Pills is the second studio album by Australian pop band The Mavis's. It was released in April 1998 by record label Mushroom.
"Puberty Song" is a song by Australian alternative rock group, The Mavis's. The song was released in December 1998 as the fourth and final single from their second studio album, Pink Pills (1998). The single peaked at number 92 on the ARIA Charts.
Rapture is the third studio album by Australian pop band, The Mavis's, which was released in March 2003 by their record label, Festival Mushroom Records. It was produced by Kalju Tonuma, who had also worked on their previous two studio albums. The album's lead single, "Coming Home", peaked at No. 72 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The second single, "Happiness", was released in February 2001, which reached the top 100 on the ARIA Singles Chart and No. 9 on the related ARIA Alternative Singles Chart.
White Noise is the fifth studio album by Australian punk rock band The Living End, first released in Australia on 19 July 2008. It was the band's first album released on the record label Dew Process. A limited edition bonus DVD, recorded at ACDC Lane in Melbourne, was also released, featuring six live songs, four of which were songs from White Noise.
Richard William "DW" Norton, is a Scottish-born Australian entertainer, songwriter, producer, guitarist and founding mainstay of metallers, Superheist. In 1998 he established Faultline Records – he has worked as the label's in house producer and CEO. He lives with his wife and fellow artist, London Gabraelle-Norton.
Effigy were an Australian three-piece indie pop/synth band, formed in Perth in 1994. The band originally consisted of Peter Hardman, and Annie Beckerling (bass), and Jason Stacey (drums). The band signed to US label, Roadrunner Records, one of the label's first Australian signings, and relocated to Melbourne.
Kid Indestructible is the debut extended play album by Australian punk/rock band 28 Days. It was the first release on the newly created Sputnik Records; after being signed to Mushroom label in late 1998. Kid Indestructible was released in May 1999 and peaked at number 69 on the ARIA Charts. The tracks "Kool" and "La Tune" received radio promotional release.
