Kalpana Shah (born 30 November 1948) is an Indian sari draper, stylist, author, and entrepreneur. [1] She resides at Altamount Road, Mumbai, India. She has practiced the art of sari draping since 1985. She gives sari draping lessons and workshops [2] and drapes saris for formal events. [3] [4] [5]

Personal life

Kalpana Shah was born in a Gujarati Jain family of jewelers. She spent her early childhood in Surat, Gujarat. At the age of 10, she and her family moved to Mumbai, Maharashtra where she finished her schooling and few years of college. [1]

Career

Kalpana trained as a Bharat Natyam dancer, performing live shows in many parts of India. She married at 23. Kalpana then took courses in beauty and grooming. Kalpana noted that many women were not comfortable in draping their saris and began to focus her career on the fashion industry. She has assisted Bollywood productions, fashion shows, and private events for sari draping. [6] [7]

Kalpana Shah has draped saris for Bollywood Celebrities such as Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Nargis Fakhri, Huma Qureshi and Jacqueline Fernandez. [8] [9] [10]

She has draped for weddings and formal functions for various business houses including the Birlas, Hindujas, Dhoots, Ruias, Ambanis, Goels, Wadias, and the Mittals of Delhi and London. [11]

Her book "The Whole 9 Yards" was published in 2012, [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] and followed by an app "Learn Sari" [18] in 2014. [19]

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain is an Indian soap opera that aired on Sony Entertainment Television from 30 May 2011 to 10 July 2014. Based on the Gujarati play Patrani by Imtiaz Patel, the soap opera was created and produced by Ekta Kapoor under the banner of Balaji Telefilms. The title of the show, along with the title-track, was derived from a song composed by R.D. Burman, from the soundtrack of the 1976 Bollywood film Balika Badhu. Comedy Nights With Kapil is an Indian Hindi-language sketch comedy and celebrity talk show hosted and produced by comedian Kapil Sharma. It was on-air on Colors TV amid 22 June 2013 to 24 January 2016. Many of the episodes feature celebrity guests who usually appear to promote their latest films in a comedy-focused talk show format. On 25 September 2013, a fire broke out on the sets of the show at Film City in Goregaon causing the entire set to collapse and an estimated loss of ₹20 Crores. Following the fire, two episodes were shot on sets of Bigg Boss in Lonavla. In September 2013, the show became India's highest rated scripted TV show.
