Kami Sid is the first Pakistani trans person to rise to prominence as a fashion model. Sid is also an actor and LGBTQ rights activist. [1] Sid also became a controversial figure after accusations of rape and sexual assault against her. [2]

Early life

Sid was born to a middle-class family in Karachi comprising seven siblings. Sid's father passed away during her adolescence and she was raised by a supportive mother. She has a bachelor's degree in Business Studies. She tried to go to the UK for higher studies, but was unable to get a visa. Among the trans communities in Pakistan, Sid belongs to the Khawaja Sira community. [3]

Professional life, activism, and controversies

In 2012, Sid travelled to Thailand for their first photoshoot. The exposure as Pakistan's first trans model brought about a lot of backlash. [3]

In November 2016, Sid did a photoshoot as a form of protest against the atrocities committed against transgender people in Pakistan. [4] On the Pakistani Independence Day of 2017, Sid posed on a rooftop in Karachi while holding up the Pakistani flag. She has given a lecture on transphobia and misogyny in the Karachi Literature Festival in London. Sid is a board member of this non-profit organisation called 'Street to School', which teaches sex-ed and cultural diversity to schoolchildren. She is the program coordinator of the Aks International Minorities Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark. [5]

In 2017, Sid made her acting debut in the short film "Rani" as a transgender toy seller who makes her living selling the items on the streets of Karachi. Produced by GrayScale and Rizvilia Productions, the film is directed by Hammad Rizvi. [6] Of Sid's performance in the film, the Daily Pakistan said that Sid "is a force of nature in it". [7] She was also cast in a play titled 'Dil e Nadan', a play based on a trans person and their relationship with society. [8]

Kami Sid was also accused of rape and sexual assault after which Aurat March organizers removed her from serving as a part of their organizing team in 2018. [9] [10] Though Kami rejects the allegations but Aurat March organizers issued a statement that Sid intimidated them. [11] Kami Sid's participation in the PR campaign Change The Clap has also been critiqued for appeasing neoliberal forces and ignoring local practices of the Khawaja Sira community. [12] [13]

The Pakistani Penal Code of 1860, originally developed under the British Raj, criminalises sodomy with possible penalties of prison sentences from two years to a life sentence and fines. Despite its illegality, homosexual acts are only occasionally prosecuted by authorities in Pakistan. Other morality and public order provisions in the Penal Code are however used to target LGBT Pakistanis.

Dil-e-Nadaan is a Pakistani television series. It is produced by Gold Bridge Media, written by Sajjad Haider Zaidi. It started Momina Khan and Asad Zaman Khan in lead roles. It first aired on Express Entertainment on 6 November 2017 and last aired on 7 May 2018 after completing 101 episodes. The Original soundtrack was performed by Sahir Ali Bagga along with Shumaila Hussain as a co-singer.

Mira Sethi is a Pakistani actor and writer. The daughter of journalists and politicians Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, Sethi attended Lahore Grammar School and Cheltenham Ladies' College. She graduated from Wellesley College 2010 and spent her junior year at the University of Oxford. At Wellesley, she studied English and South Asian studies, and she was the student speaker at her commencement ceremony. Sethi was a Robert L. Bartley fellow and an assistant book editor at The Wall Street Journal for about two years and also contributed political commentary for the newspaper, particularly on the subject of Pakistan. In 2011, Sethi returned to Pakistan to pursue an acting career. Her first role was playing Natasha in the ARY Digital serial drama Silvatein, followed by Mohabat Subh Ka Sitara Hai, which aired on Hum TV.

Bindiya Rana is a Pakistani transgender activist. She is a member of the Khwaja Sara community and the founder and president of Gender Interactive Alliance headquartered in Pakistan. Rana ran for a seat in the provincial assembly in Karachi but lost the election.

The Aurat March is an annual socio-political demonstration in Pakistani cities such as Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Quetta to observe International Women's Day.

The Aurat Azadi March was started in 2018 in Pakistan by members of Women Democratic Front, other organizations like Women's Action Forum, Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls alliance, Young Teachers Association, Home-Based Women Workers Union, Awami Workers Party, Awami Jamhoori Party also joined the march on International Women's Day in Islamabad. Aurat Azadi March and Aurat March are organized by different groups of women since 2018. Aurat Azadi March is organized by group of socialist feminists whereas Aurat March is organized by group of liberal feminists. Aurat March was also started the same year by the group of individual women known as "Hum Aurtein" collective in Karachi and Lahore.

The #MeToo movementin Pakistan is modeled after the international #MeToo movement and began in late 2018 in Pakistani society. It has been used as a springboard to stimulate a more inclusive, organic movement, adapted to local settings, and has aimed to reach all sectors, including the lowest rungs of society.

Cynthia D. Ritchie is an American filmmaker, analyst, and social media campaigner who has been living in Pakistan since 2010. Ritchie has campaigned through social media to uplift the overall image of Pakistan.

Nayyab Ali is a Pakistani transgender activist, with over ten years of work in advocating and defending human rights for the transgender community of Pakistan. Her work includes dealing with issues such as gender inequality, and economically empowering and enhancing the livelihood of the transgender community. She received the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights in 2020, for her work with transgender rights. She became one of the first, amongst thirteen transgender candidates, to run for election in the 2018 Pakistan election. She is the first Pakistani to receive the GALA award. She is the first Transgender Woman to be elected as Co-Chairperson of EVAW/G Alliance. In 2020, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Pakistan declared Ali as a Gender Equality Advocate in Pakistan.

Amna Mawaz Khan is a Pakistani classical dancer of Bharatnatyam, theatre artist, feminist and political worker. She is founding member of Women Democratic Front.

Sara Gill is a Pakistani physician and transgender activist.
