Kasaragod is a municipal town and administrative headquarters of Kasaragod district in the state of Kerala, India. Established in 1966, Kasaragod was the first municipal town in the district. It is the northernmost district of Kerala and is also known as Sapta Bhasha Sangama Bhumi.

On 10 March 2018, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated Payyanur as the fifth taluk in the district. He is a Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly representing Kannur since 2016. Prior to that, he represented Edakkad from 2006 to 2011, and Irikkur from 1980 to 1982 in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He also served as a Member of the Lok Sabha representing Kasaragod from 1971 to 1980, becoming an MP at the age of 27. He is a member of the Congress (Secular) Party.
