Karaye Emirates is the Emirate council in Kano State with its headquarters in Karaye town. The current Emir of Karaye is Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II. [1] [2] [3]

History

Karaye town is the headquarters of the Karaye emirate and is located west of Kano city.  Even before the arrival of Bagauda in 999, Magunguna settled in Karaye. The town of Karaye was founded in 1085. From 1101 to 1793, the kings of Habe ruled Karaye. During the time of the Habe rulers, the Karaye emirate expanded to include the Western and Northern areas of the current Kano State. [4]

Relations with Kano

When the House of Bagauda was ruling in Kano, they asked for cooperation with their neighbor Karaye Emirate in order to unite their forces in order to protect themselves from other emirates like Zaria, Katsina and Sokoto. Karaye agreed to cooperate with the House of Bagauda where Karaye returned to the Kingdom of Kano. From the time Karaye was under the Kano Kingdom until the arrival of the Fulani Kings after the Usman Dan Fodio's Jihad. [5]

The Current Kingdom of Karaye

The Karaye Emirates continued to be under the Kingdom of Kano until 2020 when the Kano State Government issued five more new emirates and changed the structure of the emirate of Kano. At that time the Kano government brought back the new Emirate of Karaye. [6] [7] [8] [9] The Karaye Emirates consists eight local government areas of Kano State, Karaye, Rogo, Gwarzo, Kabo, Rimin Gado, Madobi, Kiru and Shanono. [10]

Dissolution

On May 23, 2024, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf abolished the Karaye Emirate and four other emirates created in 2019 by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. This restored Kano State to a single emirate structure. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II was installed as the Emir of Kano, leading the re-unified Kano Emirate. This move aimed to reinforce the historical and administrative coherence of Kano's traditional system. [11] [12] [13]

Mohammed Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, FNSE FNIQS is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Kano state from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015. After he lost his re-election in 2003, he was appointed the first Minister of Defence of the Fourth Republic with no prior military background from 2003 to 2007, under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was later elected to the Senate in 2015, serving one term under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Kano Central Senatorial District.

Muhammadu Sanusi II, ; born 31 July 1961), known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II, is the spiritual leader (khalifa) of the Tijanniyah Sufi order in Nigeria and the emir of the ancient city-state of Kano,. He is a member of the Dabo dynasty and was born in Kano in 1961 into the royal family as the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I. He succeeded his great-uncle Ado Bayero to the throne on 8 June 2014, assuming the regnal name Muhammadu Sanusi II. He spent most of his reign advocating for cultural reform in Northern Nigeria. In 2020, he was dethroned by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was succeeded by his cousin Aminu Ado Bayero. On 23 May 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated him to the throne making him the 16th Fulani emir of Kano.

Government College, Birnin Kudu is a secondary school in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State. Founded as a middle school in 1947 by the regional government, the college has some notable alumni. including five governors and industrialist Aliko Dangote.

Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero is the eldest son of Ado Bayero and the brother of current Emir Aminu Ado Bayero. He was the Chiroma of Kano from 1990 to 2015; and was titled Wambai of Kano by his brother.

Rano Emirate is one of the four new emirates created in Kano State, Nigeria in 2019. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Northern Nigeria, dating back to the 6th century AD. Rano Emirates has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with historical monuments such as rocks, walls, and palaces. Rano Emirates was once part of the Kano Emirate, which was a Muslim state that emerged from the Fulani jihad in the early 19th century. Rano Emirates has had three ruling dynasties: the Kwararrafawa, the Habe, and the Fulani. The current emir of Rano Emirates is Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, who was appointed in 2020 after deceased of first emir of Rano Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila.

Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya is the current Emir of Gaya, one of the four new Emirates created by Governor Ganduje's administration in 2019. He was appointed by the Kano State Government on September 26, 2021, following the death of his father, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkadir, who was the first Emir of Gaya. Ibrahim Aliyu was the Chiroman Gaya, a titleholder, before his ascension to the throne. He is the head of the Gaya Emirate. He is also a member of the Kano State Council of Emirs, which advises the Governor on matters of traditional administration and security.
