Karin Lind

Karin Lind is a Swedish astronomer whose research involves spectroscopy of stars in order to determine their chemical composition, and the use of this information to understand the origin of heavy elements in supernova explosions [1] and the way radiation and energy moves through stellar atmospheres. [2] Her work has in particular clarified the roles of Big Bang nucleosynthesis and supernovas in producing the quantities of lithium observed in early stars. [1] She is an associate professor in the Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University, [2] and a participant and survey builder in the GALAH collaboration, which uses the Anglo-Australian Telescope's HERMES instrument to map the chemical compositions of stars in the Milky Way. Education and career

Lind was born in Sweden, [2] and was raised in Motala. [4] After an undergraduate degree at Uppsala University, [2] and a 2007 master's degree, [4] she traveled to Germany for doctoral study at the European Southern Observatory and Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, near Munich. [2] She completed her PhD through the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2010; her dissertation, Chemical analysis of globular star clusters : theory and observation, was jointly supervised by Francesca Primas and Martin Asplund. [5]

She remained at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics as a postdoctoral researcher from 2010 to 2013, and continued her postdoctoral studies at the University of Cambridge in the UK from 2013 to 2014, before returning to Uppsala as a Marie-Curie Research Fellow in 2014. [4] She became a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg for four years, from 2015 to 2019, before returning to Sweden in 2019 for her current position at Stockholm University. [2]

Recognition

As well as receiving a 2014 Marie Curie Fellowship, Lind was a 2015 recipient of the Sofia Kovalevskaya Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, funding her work as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. [4] She was the 2016 recipient of the Ludwig Biermann Award of the German Astronomical Society. [1]

She was the 2023 recipient of the Strömer-Ferrnerska Award of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, "for world-leading research in stellar spectroscopy to investigate the history of the Milky Way". [6]

She also was in charge of the SDSS-III domain for the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) project and is the primary investigator on SEGUE-2. Her focuses involve the study of the Milky Way galaxy, with a focus on the evolution that it took to reach its current state.

Johanna Sofia Nikolina Feltzing is a Swedish astronomer and Professor of Astronomy at Lund University since 2011. She completed her PhD at Uppsala University in 1996, publishing a dissertation about the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. Feltzing was the first woman to complete a PhD in astronomy at Uppsala, and the tenth in Sweden. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Royal Greenwich Observatory and the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge at Cambridge University from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, she moved to Lund Observatory.

Roberta M. Humphreys is an American observational stellar astrophysicist. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Minnesota. Her work has included Galactic structure, observational stellar evolution, stellar populations, and large databases. She is best known for her research on massive stars in the Milky Way and in nearby resolved galaxies.

Paula Jofré is a Chilean astronomer and astrophysicist. She was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Next, 2019, for her work with British anthropologist Robert Foley resulting to their collaboration about how "stars birthed in particular parts of the universe could be elementally related because they condense out of the same interstellar clouds" and "pass on their chemistry, much like parents pass along parts of their DNA to their children."

Paola Caselli is an Italian astronomer and astrochemist known for her research on molecular clouds, star formation and planet formation, and the astrochemistry behind the materials found within the Solar System. She is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics near Munich in Germany. She also holds an honorary professorship at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
