Karina Rykman (born Karina Rajchman) is an Indie/jam rock singer-songwriter, bassist, and guitarist from New York.
Karina Rykman grew up in New York City, the daughter of two Columbia professors with specialties in philosophy, French, and art history. Her father is philosopher John Rajchman, and her grandfather is Jan A. Rajchman, a Polish-American computer scientist. Her father introduced her to classical music such as Bach's Goldberg Variations, rather than rock & roll. [1]
While attending the Upper West Side's Calhoun School, [2] she became obsessed with rock music after learning to play the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" on an acoustic guitar in the 8th grade. [3]
At age 13, she started her first band, False Arrest, with whom she played shows at The Knitting Factory, Don Hills, and various New York City nightclubs. [4] She then went on to play in a multitude of local bands throughout high school. She graduated from NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized study in 2016, with a concentration in "Invention & Distribution In Contemporary Music". [5]
By the time Rykman was a teenager, she had landed several high-profile gigs which included America's Got Talent and backing up pop star Julia Michaels on The Today Show. [6] As a teen, Rykman played in the indie-rock band The Sound of Urchin. [7]
While studying at Tomato's House Of Rock, a School Of Rock-adjacent afterschool program, she drew the attention of Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz who would ask her to play guitar in his power trio, Crescent Moon. [8] Later, when Dreiwitz had to step away as bass player in pianist Marco Benevento's band due to Ween's comeback, he recommended Rykman as the obvious replacement. Rykman replaced Dreiwitz in Marco Benevento's band in 2016 and has been a fixture in the band since. [9]
In 2019, she wrote and recorded her first original song, "Plants". Before she had two singles to her name, Rykman had already opened for bands such as Khruangbin and Guster. Her repertoire and her audience grew organically from there, recording and self-releasing several singles while playing headlining shows and many summer festivals. [10]
While playing at The Peach Festival in 2021, she re-connected with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. [11] The guitarist, whom she had originally met while in middle school with his daughters, offered to produce her debut album ‘Joyride.' [12] The album was recorded at The Barn (recording studio) where many Phish albums were written and recorded. [13]
Rykman has appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on multiple occasions while serving as a substitute bassist for the 8G Band. [14]
In April 2024, Rykman opened for the rock band My Morning Jacket in Detroit, joining the band on stage for a cover of a Radiohead song. [15] Rykman has recorded a cover of an early Billie Eilish track “Ocean Eyes” with rock band The Gaslight Anthem. [16]

The Mollusk is the sixth studio album by American rock band Ween, released by Elektra Records on June 24, 1997. It is a multi-genre concept album with a dark nautical theme, with most songs incorporating elements from psychedelia and/or sea shanties, while also featuring a heavy progressive rock influence. Dean Ween described the album as "the only record that I ever felt really confident about" and "my favorite record we've ever done". Gene Ween has echoed this sentiment, saying: "The Mollusk is probably my favorite, at the end of the day".

He has toured, performed and recorded with a number of other bands, including Cass McCombs, A Big Yes and a Small No, Fat Mama, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Bustle In Your Hedgerow, Younger Brother, Shpongle, Tom Hamilton's American Babies, the Trey Anastasio/ Mike Gordon duo, the Gene Ween Band, and Furthur. He also plays with the Shpongle Live Band. In 2013 he formed a Grateful Dead tribute band called Joe Russo's Almost Dead.
Tony Markellis was a bassist and record producer, born in Helena, Montana, to a Greek immigrant, Constantine Markellis, and the daughter of Greek immigrants, Victoria Carkulis, residing in Saratoga Springs, New York from 1975 until his death. Markellis was best known as the bass guitarist for the Trey Anastasio Band and various other groups led by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio.
Marco Benevento is an American pianist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, who has been a fixture of the New York experimental music rock and jazz scene since 1999. He is the founder and recording engineer of Fred Short, a recording studio in Upstate New York, and a member of the rock groups Benevento/Russo Duo and Joe Russo's Almost Dead, both of which feature his regular musical collaborator Joe Russo.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead is an American rock band formed in 2013 that mainly covers the music of the Grateful Dead. Formed by Furthur and Benevento/Russo Duo drummer Joe Russo, the band played their first show on January 26, 2013 at the Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to drummer Joe Russo, the band also includes Ween's bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger on guitar and vocals, and Tom Hamilton of Brothers Past and American Babies on guitar and vocals.
Dopapod is an American rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. The current lineup includes keyboardist/vocalist Eli Winderman, guitarist/vocalist Rob Compa, bassist Chuck Jones, drummer Neal “Fro” Evans, and former lighting director Luke Stratton.
