Karl McPhillips

Karl McPhillips (11 April 1988) is an Irish chess player with FIDE rating 2240 in 2005 and 2303 in 2016. He is FIDE Master (FM). [1]

In February 2005 he won the Gonzaga Classics. [2] In July 2005 he became third at the national Irish chess championships, held in Dublin, scoring 6.5/9. In the same year he was one of four boys, selected by the Irish Chess League to participate in the World Junior Chess Championship. [3]

In 2011 and in 2014 he won the Armstrong Cup. [4] [5]

Wang Hao (chess player) Chinese chess player

Chess title

Irish Chess Union Governing body for chess on the island of Ireland

The Irish Chess Union (ICU), is the governing body for chess in Ireland since its formation in 1912. ICU is a member of FIDE since 1933 and the European Chess Union. The ICU promotes chess in Ireland and maintains the chess rating for players registered with the ICU, which are published monthly. It runs competitions such as the Irish Chess Championship and selects teams to participate in international competitions for Ireland.

The Armstrong Cup is the oldest Irish team league competition and has been played every year since 1888, perhaps giving it a claim on the longest running chess competition in the world. The Club is named after William Armstrong BL (1849-1899) who presented the cup in its first season It is organised by the Leinster Chess Union and is division one of the Leinster leagues. Each team comprises 8 players, and the league comprises 12 teams. Each year the bottom two clubs are relegated, and the top two clubs from the second division Heidenfeld Trophy are promoted. The winners of the Armstrong Cup go forward to participate in the National Club Championships run by the Irish Chess Union. As well as being graded by the ICU, games in the Armstrong Cup are submitted for rating by the International Chess Federation FIDE.

The Heidenfeld Trophy is chess league competition in Leinster, Ireland, it is the second division of the Leinster Chess Union. Founded in 1971 with the restructuring of the division one Armstrong Cup it was named after the famous German born chess player and former Irish Champion Wolfgang Heidenfeld. The league comprises twelve teams, of eight players on each team, with the top two teams each season are promoted to the Armstrong Cup, with the bottom two teams relegated to the third division Ennis Shield. Players have to be registered with the Irish Chess Union, all matches are rated by the ICU, and in 2010 for the first time matches were graded by FIDE.

Sam E. Collins is an Irish chess player. He was awarded the title International Master by FIDE in 2004.

Jim "J.J." Walsh is an Irish Chess player, chess correspondent and the compiler of the daily chess puzzle in the Irish Times. Walsh started contributing a weekly chess column and puzzle in the Irish Times in April 1955, and since September 1972 the daily chess puzzle, making his puzzle one of the longest running chess articles in the world.

Stephen Brady is an Irish chess player who had a FIDE rating of 2331 in 2005. He is a FIDE Master.

Colm Daly is an Irish chess player with a FIDE rating of 2365 in 2005 and 2319 in 2016. He is a FIDE master (FM).
