Karlstads Curlingklubb (Karlstads CK) is a curling club located in Karlstad, Sweden. It is currently best known as the home club of Team Niklas Edin, which holds a record of winning five World Curling Championship titles and seven European Curling Championship titles. [1] It was also the home club of one of the most successful women's curling teams of all time, skipped by Elisabeth Högström. The team skipped by Högström won Sweden's first women's World Curling Championship gold medal, in addition to two World Curling Championship silver medals and four European Curling Championship gold medals. History

Karlstads CK was founded on October 12, 1926, at Stadshotellet in Karlstad. [3] On December 28, 1927, the club's first match was played against teams from other cities in Sweden. [4] [5] In 2008, the Karlstad Curling Arena was opened and is now the current home for Karlstads CK. Over the course of its history, teams from Karlstads CK have won collectively more than 50 Swedish Curling Championships. [3]

Karlstads CK is the home club for several well-known curling teams. The first to achieve notoriety on the global stage was skipped by Elisabeth Högström, who won Sweden's first women's World Championship gold medal in curling in 1981, along with Carina Olsson, Birgitta Sewik and Karin Sjögren. [2] Högström also skipped teams to four European Curling Championship gold medals and won the silver medal in the curling exhibition at the Olympics in 1988. [6] Anette Norberg also skipped the Karlstads CK team of Cecilia Östlund, Sara Carlsson, Liselotta Lennartsson, and Karin Rudström to a World Championship gold medal in 2011. [7]

On the men's side, Karlstads CK is perhaps now best known as the home club for Team Niklas Edin, who holds the record for having won the most World Championship gold medals. Team Edin also holds the record for most European Curling Championship gold medals held by a single team. [8] Team Niklas Edin is also the first non-Canadian team to win three Grand Slams in the Grand Slam of Curling and the only non-Canadian men's team to win the Pinty's Cup. [9] Before Team Edin, the team of Connie Östlund, Per Lindeman, Carl von Wendt and Bo Andersson was the first team from Karlstads CK to win a World Championship medal, taking the bronze in 1984. Other successful curling Karlstads CK men's teams representing Sweden at the World Championships include the skipped by Oskar Eriksson, winning a silver medal at the 2014 World Men's Curling Championship. Other teams representing the club at the world championships include those skipped by Kjell Grengmark, Dan-Ola Eriksson, and Sören Grahn.

Today, Karlstads CK is well known for serving different age groups and curling needs. It is certified by the Swedish Curling Association as having a high standard for wheelchair curling. [3]

International Championships

Karlstads CK was the host club when Sweden hosted the 1977 World Men's Curling Championships at Färjestads Ishall. [3] Sweden's men's team from Härnösand, skipped by Ragnar Kamp, won the gold medal.

Karlstads CK was also the host club when Sweden hosted the 2012 European Curling Championships at the Löfbergs Arena. [3] Sweden's men's team, skipped by Niklas Edin, won the gold medal, while the women's team from Skellefteå, skipped by Margaretha Sigfridsson, took the bronze medal.

Johan Niklas Edin is a Swedish curler. He currently resides in Karlstad, which has been his curling home base since 2008. He holds several sport distinctions. He is the first and the only skip in World Curling Federation (WCF) history to win three Olympic medals – gold (2022), silver (2018), and bronze (2014) – and to skip men's curling teams to six World Men's Curling Championship medals. He is also a seven-time European Curling Championship titleholder and won three silver medals in those championships. He is currently tied with Oskar Eriksson in first place on the WCF-recognized list of championship medals, with thirty-eight in total. He reached the playoffs in thirty-seven Grand Slam of Curling events and won the Pinty's Cup with his current teammates, Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wranå, and Christopher Sundgren. With the same lineup in 2022, Edin and his teammates also became the first and only men's curling team to win a fourth consecutive World Men's Curling Championship. Edin has played exclusively in the position of skip since 2007. The team bearing his name has been ranked on the World Curling Tour as high as No. 1, including for most of the 2017–18 season. As of the end of the 2021–22 Curling Season, Team Edin was ranked in the top three teams in the world.

Oskar Ingemar Eriksson is a Swedish curler from Karlstad. He currently plays third for the Niklas Edin rink. He is the first curler in history to win four Olympic medals – gold, silver, and two bronze – and the first to secure two Olympic medals in different curling disciplines in the same Olympic Games. He is also a six-time World Men's Curling Champion, seven-time European Men's Curling Champion, and the first curler in history to win three gold medals in major international curling championships in a single calendar year – the World Men's Curling Championship, the European Curling Championship, and the World Mixed Doubles Championship. Having also won two World Mixed Doubles Championship medals, he is the first and the only curler to have seven World Curling Championship gold medals in the senior men's division and has won twelve World Curling Championship medals overall in that division. He also holds the record for most gold medals in international competitions as recognized by the World Curling Federation. He is the only member of Team Sweden to have competed in all of the World Men's Curling Championships from 2011 to 2021. He won medals in all but one of these championships, as well as playing in multiple positions – as skip, third, second, and as an alternate. In 2022, Eriksson and his teammates also became the first men's team in history to win four consecutive World Men's Curling Championships, with Eriksson and Niklas Edin becoming the first and only two curlers in history to have six career gold World Men's Curling Championship medals.

The 2012 European Curling Championships was held from December 7 to 15 at the Löfbergs Lila Arena and the Karlstad Curling Club in Karlstad, Sweden. The Group A competitions was held at the Löfbergs Lila Arena, while the Group B competitions was held at the Karlstad Curling Club. The 2012 European Curling Championships marked the fourth time that Sweden hosted the European Curling Championships. The Group C competitions were held from October 5 to 10 in Erzurum, Turkey.

The men's tournament of the 2012 European Curling Championships was held at the Löfbergs Lila Arena and the Karlstad Curling Club in Karlstad, Sweden from December 7 to 15. The winners of the Group C tournament in Erzurum, Turkey moved on to the Group B tournament. The top eight men's teams at the 2012 European Curling Championships, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Switzerland, Scotland, and Finland, represented their respective nations at the 2013 World Men's Curling Championship in Victoria, British Columbia.

Kjell Tommy Christoffer Sundgren is a Swedish curler. He currently plays lead for the Swedish national team, skipped by Niklas Edin. The World Curling Federation's historical records rank Sundgren as one of the most successful curlers of all time, both in the medals that he has received and his lifetime performance in individual championships. He is one of only three curlers in history to have won both the Olympic Gold medal and five World Championship gold medals. In 2022, he surpassed the previous record holders for World Men's Curling Championship medals, winning his fifth gold medal, in addition to his and European Men's Curling Championship, placing him third of all time on both lists behind his teammates Edin and Oskar Eriksson. He also has reached twenty-seven playoffs at Grand Slam of Curling events, including winning three Grand Slam tournaments and the Pinty's Cup as part of Team Niklas Edin, the first non-Canadian men's team to do so. In 2017, Sundgren and his teammates also became the first men's team in history to win four consecutive European Men's Curling Championships. Rasmus Bele Åke Wranå is a Swedish curler from Karlstad. He currently plays second for the Swedish national team, skipped by Niklas Edin. With his teammates Edin, Oskar Eriksson, and Christoffer Sundgren, Wranå became part of the first and only team in history to win four consecutive gold medals at the World Men's Curling Championship. In 2017, Wranå and these same teammates also became the first non-Canadian men's curling team to win three Grand Slam tournaments and the Pinty's Cup. Along with Anders Kraupp, he is one of only two male curlers in Sweden to have won all three Swedish national championships in which he was eligible to compete in the senior division – men's team curling, mixed curling, and mixed doubles. In 2018 he was inducted into the Swedish Curling Hall of Fame.
