Karol Aquilina (born 31 October 1979) is a Maltese politician and lawyer currently serving as a Member of Parliament.

Biography

Aquilina studied at St Aloysius College and graduated as Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta (2004) with a thesis titled “The Principle of Equality of Arms in Maltese Criminal Law” in which Aquilina provides a detailed examination of the principle of equality of arms as part of the general right to a fair trial as guaranteed by section 39 of the Maltese Constitution and Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

As a student Aquilina was President of the Maltese National Youth Council, KNŻ (2003), [1] [2] President of the Maltese Christian Democrat Students, SDM (2001-2002) and Student Representative on the Senate of the University of Malta (2002-2004).

Political career

He has been an active member of the Nationalist Party for a considerable number of years. In 2002 he joined the Nationalist Party Youth Movement, MŻPN and was elected as its Vice President (2002-2009). He is a member of the Nationalist Party's executive committee having been elected first in 2008.He is the Opposition spokesman for good governance, strengthening of democracy, citizenship and reform of the Public Service. [3] In 2020, Aquilina was elected Secretary of the Nationalist Party's parliamentary group after being nominated for the post by party leader Bernard Grech. [4]

Aquilina is a member of the Standing Committee on Standards in Public Life established under the Standards in Public Life Act (Chapter 570 of the Laws of Malta), the Standing Committee on Public Appointments established under the Public Administration Act (Chapter 595 of the Laws of Malta) and of the Standing Committee on Privileges established by the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.

He was Mayor of Siġġiewi (2012-2015) [5] and President of the Administrative Council of the Nationalist Party (2011-2017).

Personal life

He is the son of Carmelo (Nenu) Aquilina, the former Mayor of Siġġiewi. [6] Aquilina is married with two children.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Malta since 1 September 2017 following the passage of legislation in the Parliament on 12 July 2017. The bill was signed into law by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on 1 August 2017. On 25 August 2017, the Minister for Equality, Helena Dalli, issued a legal notice to commence the law on 1 September. Malta was the first European microstate, the 21st country in the world and the thirteenth in Europe to allow same-sex couples to marry nationwide. In 2024, Malta was named one of the best marriage destinations for same-sex couples by a British wedding planning website, and polling suggests that a majority of Maltese people support the legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Edward Zammit Lewis is a Maltese politician within the Labour Party. He has been a member of the Maltese House of Representatives since 2013. Ryan Callus is a Maltese politician currently serving as a Nationalist MP in the House of Representatives of Malta. He is currently serving as Spokesperson for Planning and Simplification of Administrative Processes. In March 2012, Callus was elected Deputy Mayor of the Siggiewi Local Council. He was subsequently elected a Member of Parliament in March 2013, after contesting for the first time the sixth district, including Siggiewi, Hal Luqa and Hal Qormi. He obtained 1595 votes in the first count and elected in the 11th count with 3916 votes. An engineer by profession, having graduated at the University of Malta in 2005, Hon. Callus completed a Private Pilot Licence at the Delta Connection Academy in Florida. In 2008, Callus obtained a Master of Science in Project Management from the Lancaster University Management School in the United Kingdom.

Vassallo was defeated in 2022 elections. Vassallo served as a Parliamentary Secretary in various capacities under the premierships of Eddie Fenech Adami and Lawrence Gonzi from 1998 until 2008.
