Karola Stange (born Karola-Elke Unger on 27 October 1959) is a German politician of The Left who has served as a member of the Landtag of Thuringia since 2009. [1] She has also been a member of the Erfurt city council since 1999,and unsuccessfully ran for mayor of the city in 2006 and 2018. [2] [3]
Stange grew up in the outskirts of Weimar where she attended the polytechnic high school in Mellingen and Lehnstedt. After completing the 10th grade in 1976,she completed an apprenticeship as a gardener at the LPG "Valley of Peace" in Kromsdorf,followed by a technical college degree at the Horticultural Engineering School in Erfurt from 1979 to 1982. Stange is married and has two children and three grandchildren. [3]
From 1984,Stange was an employee of the SED district executive as a horticulture specialist. From 1988 she was employed by the Erfurt city executive. After the Peaceful Revolution,she worked for the PDS association in Erfurt,becoming a staffer for the party's faction in the Landtag of Thuringia in 1991. She was an advisor on social,senior,and disability policy until 2009. [3] [1]
Stange was elected to the Erfurt city council in 1999,as well as the Hochheim neighbourhood council. She was the PDS's candidate in the 2006 local elections,was unsuccessful in her bid for mayor. After the PDS merged into The Left in 2007,she was elected to the Landtag in 2009. She won in the constituency of Erfurt I, [4] narrowly retaining it for the party;it had previously been held by state chairman Bodo Ramelow. She was re-elected in 2014 with an increased majority of 36.8% of total votes, [5] and again in 2019 with 28.9%. [6]
Stange was the Left's candidate in Erfurt –Weimar –Weimarer Land II during the 2013 federal election. She placed third with 23.4% of votes,and was not elected. [2] In 2015,she became deputy leader of the Left's group in the Erfurt city council. [3] She ran for mayor of Erfurt for a second time in 2018 as candidate for The Left,placing fourth with 11.1% of votes. She is currently speaker for gender equality and disability policy in the Landtag. [2] [7]
Bodo Ramelow is a German politician who has served since 4 March 2020 as Minister-President of Thuringia,an office he previously held from 2014 to 5 February 2020. He is the first head of a German state government to serve non-consecutive terms in office since Eberhard Diepgen,who served twice as Governing Mayor of Berlin. A member of The Left,he previously chaired the party's group in the Landtag of Thuringia. On 8 October 2021,he was elected to a one-year term as President of the Bundesrat. His term lasted from 1 November 2021 until 31 October 2022.
The Left,commonly referred to as the Left Party,is a democratic socialist political party in Germany. The party was founded in 2007 as the result of the merger of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) and Labour and Social Justice –The Electoral Alternative. The Landtag of Thuringia is the parliament of the German federal state of Thuringia. It convenes in Erfurt and currently consists of 88 members from five parties. According to the free state's constitution,the primary functions of the Landtag are to pass laws,elect the Minister-President and control the government of Thuringia.
The 2009 Thuringian state election was held on 30 August 2009 to elect the members of the 5th Landtag of Thuringia. It was held on the same day as the 2009 Saarland state election and the 2009 Saxony state election. The incumbent Christian Democratic Union (CDU) government led by Minister-President Dieter Althaus was defeated. The CDU subsequently formed a grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Althaus resigned after the election due to his party's poor performance,which was far below expectations. He was succeeded by fellow CDU member Christine Lieberknecht,who was elected as the new Minister-President.
