Karonga South is a constituency for the National Assembly of Malawi, located in the Karonga District of Malawi's Northern Region. [1] It elects one Member of Parliament by the first past the post system. The constituency is currently represented by People's Party MP Malani Mtonga.

Karonga is a district in the Northern Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 3,355 km.² and has a population of 194,572. It is a border district between Malawi and Tanzania, mainly occupied by the Nkhonde tribe. Other tribes include Henga tribe, Nyakyusa tribes etc.

Nyakyusa, or Nyakyusa-Ngonde, is a Bantu language of Tanzania and Malawi spoken by the Nyakyusa people around the northern end of Lake Malawi. There is no single name for the language as a whole; dialects are Nyakyusa, Ngonde (Konde), Kukwe, Mwamba (Lungulu), and Selya of Tanzania. The 2009 Karonga earthquakes occurred near Karonga, Malawi in December 2009 near the northern tip of Lake Malawi in southeast Africa.

Dr. Geoffrey L du Mhango is a Malawian economist, author, and politician. He was born in Karonga in the northern part of Malawi. He worked as a Senior development economist at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) based in Johannesburg, South Africa for 10 years from 1987 to 1998 and for the ministry of foreign affairs in Malawi. His interests are in creating an integrated planning model for investment in urban infrastructure and pricing municipal services. He is a member of the Karonga Natural Resources Development Committee that is charged with overseeing the infrastructure and environmental impact being as a result of a uranium mining venture by Australian company, Paladin Energyin Malawi. Malawian cuisine includes the foods and culinary practices of Malawi. Tea and fish are popular features of Malawian cuisine. Sugar, coffee, corn, potatoes, sorghum, cattle and goats are also important components of the cuisine and economy. Lake Malawi is a source of fish including chambo usipa, mpasa. Nsima is a staple food made from ground corn and served with side dishes of meat, beans and vegetable. It can be eaten for lunch and dinner.

‘’’Flax Katoba Musopole’’’ was a radical and militant African nationalist in late colonial Malawi, who was imprisoned after conducting a campaign of sabotage and intimidation for several months in 1959. After Malawi's independence, he became a member of the Malawi parliament and an advocate of the authoritarian and centralising policies of its first President, Hastings Banda. He was rewarded with posts as a junior minister and in Malawi’s diplomatic service, but retired from politics in 1969, spending the rest of his life in relative obscurity.
