They are also known as aravani, aruvani, and jogappa. The term is used in Pakistan as khawaja sira, the equivalent of transgender in the Urdu language.

Paiyaa (transl. Boy) is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language action-adventure film written, produced and directed by N. Linguswamy. It stars Karthi and Tamannaah Bhatia, with Milind Soman, Jagan and Sonia Deepti appearing in supporting roles. The film, produced by N. Subash Chandra Bose under the banner of Thirupathi Brothers and distributed by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies, features a film score and soundtrack composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Madhi and editing by Anthony Gonsalves.

Ko (transl. 'King') is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language political action thriller film directed by K. V. Anand, and written by Anand and the duo Suresh and Balakrishnan. The film stars Jiiva, Ajmal Ameer, Karthika Nair, and Piaa Bajpai in lead roles, while Prakash Raj and Kota Srinivasa Rao appear in supporting roles. The film follows Ashwin (Jiiva), a photojournalist working for Dina Anjal who covers the Tamil Nadu State Election. The core plot of the movie was reported to be based on the 2009 movie State of Play.
Vaanam (transl. Sky) is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Krish. It is the remake of his own Telugu film Vedam (2010) starring Allu Arjun, Manchu Manoj and Anushka Shetty. It features an ensemble cast of Silambarasan, Bharath, Anushka Shetty, Prakash Raj, Saranya Ponvannan, Sonia Agarwal, and Santhanam. The score and soundtrack were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, while cinematography and editing were handled by Nirav Shah and Anthony Gonsalves, respectively. The film, jointly produced by VTV Ganesh and R. Ganesh under VTV Productions and Magic Box Pictures, respectively was distributed by Dayanidhi Azhagiri's Cloud Nine Movies.

Naiyaandi (transl. Satire) is a 2013 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film written and directed by A. Sarkunam. The film features Dhanush and Nazriya Nazim in the lead roles. The plot focuses on a love story between a Kuthu Vilakku (lamp) shop owner and a BDS student. It was released on 11 October 2013. The film is an unofficial remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Meleparambil Anveedu and its 1995 Tamil remake Valli Vara Pora. It received negative reviews and became a flop at the box office.

Size Zero is a 2015 Indian romantic comedy film directed by Prakash Kovelamudi and written by Kanika Dhillon. The film was simultaneously shot in Telugu and Tamil language versions, the latter titled Inji Iduppazhagi. Produced by Prasad V Potluri, the film features Anushka Shetty in the lead role while Arya, Prakash Raj, Urvashi and Sonal Chauhan play supporting roles. The film was remade in Odia as Chhati Tale Ding Dong.
Kalki Subramaniam is a transgender rights activist, artist, actress, writer, inspirational speaker and entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu. She is also the southern region representative and member of the National Council for Transgender Persons in India.
