Kasim Abid is an Iraqi filmmaker, director, producer and cameraman.
Abid trained in Moscow as a cameraman before settling in London. [1] Along with Maysoon Pachachi he co-founded the non-profit making ‘The Independent Film and TV College’ in Baghdad. [1] [2]
Why his work matters
• Abid’s viewpoint is distinctive because he approaches major political/humanitarian crises (war, occupation, exile) through lived experience, daily routines, family dynamics, rather than only news-style images of conflict. For example, he said in an interview: “I wanted to make a film … that showed the audience that Iraqis are real people, not abstract explosions and body parts.” The Independent • By focusing on ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances (children crossing muddy roads in bombardment zones; street vendors; families adapting) he invites empathy and understanding of places often portrayed only via violence. • His educational work helps build capacity for Iraqi cinema across generations, which is important given the challenges of filmmaking in post-conflict Iraq (lack of infrastructure, security risks, etc.). • Themes of exile, identity, loss, return, and how art and filmmaking operate in such contexts are central in his work — especially in Mirrors of Diaspora where the question of “what happens when you’ve spent most of your life away from home” is foregrounded. Some personal/contextual notes
• He comes from a Baghdadi family; during the Iran-Iraq war his absence from the front was a source of tension for his family. The Independent • The return to Iraq in 2003 was emotional and complex: after decades away, Abid found his relatives and home altered, and that triggered Life After the Fall. The Independent • Operating under difficult conditions (Iraq in war/occupation), his films are remarkable for their persistence of vision and insistence on human stories, amid chaos.
