It has been called the "literature of ideas", and often explores the potential consequences of scientific, social, and technological innovations.

Orson Scott Card is an American novelist, critic, public speaker, essayist, and columnist. He writes in several genres but is known best for his science fiction works. His novel Ender's Game (1985) and its sequel Speaker for the Dead (1986) have won both Hugo and Nebula Awards, making Card the first author to win the two top American prizes in science fiction literature in consecutive years. A feature film adaptation of Ender's Game, which Card co-produced, was released in 2013. Card also wrote the Locus Fantasy Award-winning series The Tales of Alvin Maker (1987–2003).

Sci Phi Journal is a quarterly online magazine devoted to publishing science fiction stories and essays "at the intersection between speculative philosophy", anthropology and other humanities, with a particular focus on "fictional non-fiction". The first issue was published in October 2014. Jason Rennie founded and helmed the publication with Ben Zwycky until mid-2017. The quarterly was then briefly managed by Ray Blank, and has been edited by Adam Gerencser and Mariano Martin Rodriguez since January 2019, the pair having relaunched the magazine as a "European project".
