Katch Skinner is a ceramicist based in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire.

Education and career

Skinner began her career by taking evening classes and went on to study a BA in Art & Design and an MA in Visual Arts. [1]

Inspired by the process of making with clay - "its a medium that keeps you on your toes and has an addictive alchemy" [1] - Skinner hand makes all her domestic ware work from scratch, and specialises in making specially commissioned work for museums and galleries. [2] Skinner is a studio holder at Northlight Art Studios in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, where she works and teaches ceramics classes. [3]

Selected projects

In 2018 Skinner won the Liberty Open Call competition, becoming one of three makers chosen to have their work stocked at the Liberty London store, [4] with her limited edition distinctive character egg cups. [5]

Also in 2018, Skinner's work was included in an exhibition at Cartwright Hall which celebrated 100 years since the suffragettes helped to secure the vote for women. [6] As part of the celebration of the centenary of the vote for women, [7] commissioned ceramic pieces by Skinner were also part of A Woman's Place exhibition at the Abbey House Museum in Leeds. [8] [9] The commemorative pieces, commissioned by Leeds Museums & Galleries and now held in their collection, [10] celebrated local Yorkshire heroines. [11]

Prior to her commissions from Leeds, Skinner embarked upon a self-directed project entitled 'Women in British History' - an ongoing series of commemorative ceramic ware to celebrate remarkable women, both famous and those less well-known. [12] [5] Skinner was invited to exhibit her 'Women in British history' project at the Innovation Centre in Halifax, with the addition of a ‘Elsie Whiteley’ plate specially commissioned for the show. [13]

The Hunger Strike Medal was a silver medal awarded between August 1909 and 1914 to suffragette prisoners by the leadership of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). During their imprisonment, they went on hunger strike while serving their sentences in the prisons of the United Kingdom for acts of militancy in their campaign for women's suffrage. Many women were force-fed and their individual medals were created to reflect this.

Elsie and Mathilde Wolff Van Sandau were British suffragette sisters: Elsie was arrested for smashing shop windows, went on hunger strike and was awarded the Women's Social and Political Union Hunger Strike Medal 'for Valour'. Mathilde was a musician and suffragette, and was imprisoned twice, also for smashing windows, and was a founder of London's women's chess club and an active vegetarian.

Mary Anne Baikie a Scottish suffragist who established the Orcadian Women's Suffrage Society (OWSS) and grew the membership and public interest in the debate, in the Orkney Isles, during the campaigns for Votes for Women.

Hilda Annetta Walker FRSA was an English sculptor, and a painter of landscapes, seascapes and horses, flourishing between 1902 and 1958. She was a war artist painting in England during the First and Second World Wars, and described as "escapist". Some of her early work was the production of oilette postcard paintings for Raphael Tuck & Sons, of firemen and horses. She was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, to a family of blanket manufacturers who had the means to foster her art education. She grew up in the Protestant work ethic of Congregationalism, and attended Leeds College of Art, where she studied under William Gilbert Foster of the Staithes group and William Charles Holland King, sculptor of Dover Marine War Memorial. She signed her works "Hilda Walker" or sometimes "Hilda A. Walker".
