Kate Torney OAM is the CEO of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and was formerly the CEO of the State Library of Victoria from 2015 to 2021. [1] She took over the CEO role of the library from Sue Roberts. [2] [3] [4]

Torney was the ABC News (Australia) Director [5] for the final six years of a 20-year career there, [6] from 2009 to 2015. [3] During this time, Torney oversaw the launch of ABC News 24. Before her role as Director, she had worked in a variety of roles, including as a radio and TV reporter, producer, bureau chief, executive producer and editor. [7] Altogether she spent 25 years in journalism. [3]

Torney is a member and former Chair of National and State Libraries Australia (NSLA), [8] and serves on the boards of Circus Oz, The Conversation, and the Judith Neilson Institute of Journalism and Ideas. She was formerly a member of the Ministerial Council for Volunteers and the Ministerial Council for the Creative State. [3] [9]

The libraries collaborate on and support working groups addressing issues including: copyright issues, archival collections, collection development, marketing, collecting and preserving digital content, collections and services focusing on Indigenous Australians, and other issues relating to the collection, storage and dissemination of the various types of resources held by member institutions. It also compiles annual statistics on public library activities and usage throughout Australia, and publishes statistics on the services of its own collaborating libraries. Precursors to the organisation include the State Librarians Council, the State Libraries Council and Council of Australian State Libraries (CASL).
