Katharina Landfester is a German chemist who is a professor at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research. Her research considers the physical properties of droplets, polymerisation in emulsion and the synthesis of nanoparticles.

Early life and education

Landfester studied chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt and graduated in 1993. [1] During her undergraduate degree she was a research intern at the École européenne de chimie, polymères et matériaux (then Ecole d’Application des Hauts Polymères). She joined the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research as a graduate student, where she worked with Hans W. Spiess on the characterisation of polymers using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. She moved to the United States as a postdoctoral researcher, where she joined Lehigh University. She returned to Germany, where she joined the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and oversaw the emulsion group.[ citation needed ]

Research and career

Landfester joined the University of Ulm as a full professor and head of the Department of Organic Chemistry. Whilst at the university, she started to explore materials for biomedical applications, with a focus on better understanding the interactions of nanoparticles with cellular compartments. [2] By 2008 she had been appointed director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.

Landfester has studied colloids with precisely controlled physical properties. [3] Colloids are particles suspended in a liquid, and can permit the encapsulation of therapeutic and self-healing agents as well as the creation of specific nanostructures. [3] She is interested in the creation of protocells – vesicular structures that are generally considered the minimal units of synthetic biology – from self-assembled block copolymers. [4] These block copolymers contain permeable nanocontainers that can act as cell-like functions. [4]

The Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces is located in Potsdam-Golm Science Park in Golm, Potsdam, Germany. It was founded in 1990 as a successor of the Institute for Physical Chemistry and for Organic Chemistry, both in Berlin-Adlershof, and for Polymer Chemistry in Teltow. In 1999, it transferred to newly constructed extension facilities in Golm. It is one of 80 institutes in the Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft).

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a small-angle scattering technique by which nanoscale density differences in a sample can be quantified. This means that it can determine nanoparticle size distributions, resolve the size and shape of (monodisperse) macromolecules, determine pore sizes, characteristic distances of partially ordered materials, and much more. This is achieved by analyzing the elastic scattering behaviour of X-rays when travelling through the material, recording their scattering at small angles. It belongs to the family of small-angle scattering (SAS) techniques along with small-angle neutron scattering, and is typically done using hard X-rays with a wavelength of 0.07 – 0.2 nm. Depending on the angular range in which a clear scattering signal can be recorded, SAXS is capable of delivering structural information of dimensions between 1 and 100 nm, and of repeat distances in partially ordered systems of up to 150 nm. USAXS can resolve even larger dimensions, as the smaller the recorded angle, the larger the object dimensions that are probed.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Janus particles</span> Type of nanoparticle or microparticle

Janus particles are special types of nanoparticles or microparticles whose surfaces have two or more distinct physical properties. This unique surface of Janus particles allows two different types of chemistry to occur on the same particle. The simplest case of a Janus particle is achieved by dividing the particle into two distinct parts, each of them either made of a different material, or bearing different functional groups. For example, a Janus particle may have one half of its surface composed of hydrophilic groups and the other half hydrophobic groups, the particles might have two surfaces of different color, fluorescence, or magnetic properties. This gives these particles unique properties related to their asymmetric structure and/or functionalization.

He is professor emeritus of polymer and coating technology at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and managing consultant of Strider Research Corporation (SRC). He is best known for his work in applied dispersion technology, small particle science, and stimuli-responsive polymers based on ionic liquids, for his international conference organization activities, including Particles 2001, Particles 2002, etc., and the Gordon Research Conferences, Chemistry at Interfaces and Chemistry of Supramolecules and Assemblies, and for his editing of the Primers page for nanoparticles.org.

Joachim Maier is Emeritus Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart (Germany) and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society.

Anna Fischer is a German chemist who is a Professor of Nanomaterials at the University of Freiburg. Her research considers the development of nanomaterials for electrocatalysis.

Friederike Schmid is a German theoretical condensed-matter physicist and polymer scientist whose research involves the theory of complex fluids and polymer emulsions. She is a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Mainz.
