Katharina Prelicz-Huber (born 12 October 1959,Bern) is a Swiss politician of the Green Party of Switzerland who serves as the president of the Swiss Union of Public Service Personnel (VPOD) and a member of the National Council. [1]
Prelicz-Huber was active in the politics in Zurich for many years,in the municipal council of Zürich from 1990 to 2003 and again from 2014 to 2019 as well as the cantonal council of Zurich from 2002 to 2008. [1] On 15 September 2008,she succeeded Ruth Genner,who had been elected to the executive council of Zurich,in the National Council. [2] She had a seat in the Grand Chamber until the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2011. [1] In the Federal Elections in October 2019,she was re-elected to the National Council. [3]
Prelicz-Huber supports the Swiss political traditions of a direct democracy and federalism. [4] She has also been an active member of the women's rights movement since 1991. [5]
Prelicz-Huber is a former [6] professor at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts [7] In March 2010 she succeeded Christine Goll as the president of the VPOD. [8]
Prelicz-Huber is married,has a son. [9] Her places of origin are Winterthur,Zürich and Meilen. [9]

Islam in Switzerland has mostly arrived via immigration since the late 20th century. Numbering below 1% of total population in 1980,the fraction of Muslims in the population of permanent residents in Switzerland has quintupled in thirty years,estimated at just above 5% as of 2013. The Turks and those from The Balkans make up the largest group. There is also a large North African community and a significant Middle Eastern community. This is due to the fact that in the 1960s and 1970s,Switzerland encouraged young men from Yugoslavia and Turkey to come as guest workers. Initially these young men were only planning on staying in Switzerland temporarily,however,revised Swiss immigration laws in the 1970s permitted family regrouping. Consequently,these men ended up staying in Switzerland as these new laws allowed the wives and children of these young men into the country. Since this time period,most of the Muslim immigration to Switzerland stems from asylum seekers arriving primarily from Eastern Europe. In more recent years,there has been migration from Turkey,the Balkans,Iraq,Syria,Morocco,Somalia,and Tunisia.
