Kathryn Durst is a Canadian artist and illustrator based in Toronto, Ontario. [1]

Early life and education

Durst was born in Peterborough, Ontario, where she graduated from St. Peter Catholic Secondary School. [2] She attended Sheridan College. [1]

Career

After graduation, Durst worked as an animator for five years. She later worked as a freelance illustrator, and created illustrations for four books, [2] including Vlad the World’s Worst Vampire: Midnight Fright by Anna Wilson, [3] [4] and Merry Christmas, Mary Christmas by Laurie Friedman. [5]

In 2017, Durst's artwork was included in Toronto's "Sketching the Line" art series. [6]

In 2018, Durst began collaborating with musician Paul McCartney to create illustrations for a children's book, Hey Grandude! [7] that was published on September 5, 2019 by Random House Books. A second book called Grandude's Green Submarine was published in September 2021. [8]

Broken Pencil has called her black and white art style wonderful, bold and full of thought. Dawson also creates painted stand-alone illustrations which she turns into prints and sells on her Society6 site. The original art is created using acrylic ink and paint on recycled cardboard. Her illustrations convey a mood of whimsy and playful-uncanny. Her work typically exhibits flowing linework and favors a 50's color palette.

<i>Hey Grandude!</i> Childrens picture book by Paul MCCartney

Hey Grandude! is a picture book for children written by Paul McCartney and illustrated by Kathryn Durst. It was published by Puffin Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in September 2019. An audio version of the book with an instrumental soundtrack was also released.

Paul Morin is a Canadian artist and children's book illustrator. Morin started painting in 1977 before working as a freelancer throughout the 1980s. In 1990, Morin began his children's book illustrative career and had contributed to twenty books by the mid 2010s. Of his illustrations, Morin won the 1990 Governor General's Award for English-language children's illustration with The Orphan Boy. He also received the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award for The Orphan Boy in 1991 and The Dragon's Pearl in 1993. As an artist, Morin established multiple art galleries in Ontario from the late 2000s to early 2010s. He also designed the food packaging for the maple leaf cream cookies for Dare Foods.
