Major General Kathryn Leslei Toohey, AM , CSC is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. She served as Head of Land Capability from 2017 to 2019, [1] and Head Force Integration Division within the Vice Chief of the Defence Force Group from June 2019 to January 2023.
Toohey entered the Australian Defence Force Academy as an Australian Army officer cadet in 1987. [2] She graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the affiliated University of New South Wales (UNSW) and, following further training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals in 1990. She completed an Honours degree at UNSW in 1991, [3] [4] before receiving her first posting as a troop commander with the 2nd Signals Regiment. [1]
Toohey has also had postings in the 7th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), 1st Brigade Headquarters, in the Strategic Operations Division of Headquarters Northern Command, and 13 months as a troop commander in the Force Communications Unit as part of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia. She has served in staff appointments in the Capability Development Group (CDG) and its successor Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) and in Force Development Group. Toohey was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours for her role in the development of Military Satellite Communications. [5] In 2009, she served as the European Liaison Officer for CDG, representing the Australian Defence Force at multinational, NATO and European Union fora. In 2012, Toohey was director of the Capability and Technology Management College. [1]
Toohey took leave from the army in 2016 to assume the statutory appointment of Deputy Electoral Commissioner in the Australian Electoral Commission. [6] Upon her return to the army in 2017, she was promoted to the rank of major general and appointed as the Head of Land Capability. [1]
Toohey was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours for "exceptional service to the Australian Defence Force in the fields of capability development and education." [7] She relinquished command of Land Capability in June 2019 and was appointed Head Force Integration Division within the Vice Chief of the Defence Force Group. [3]
Major General Elizabeth Cosson, is the current Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, and has been a career senior public servant since 2010. Cosson has "vowed" to resign as Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, on 19 July 2020, if she cannot improve the department’s relationship with veterans stating in a media interview on 19 July 2019 that "if I’m still part of the problem in 12 months I will hand over [the job]."
Major General Anthony Peter Fraser, is an Australian public servant and retired Australian Army officer. He was the Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) within the Department of Defence, he held the position from November 2018–August 2022, after being succeeded by Chris Deeble. He was previously the managing director of Airbus Australia Pacific (2015–2018). He retired from the army in 2011 after a 34-year career, his final posting being Head, Helicopter Systems Division within the Defence Materiel Organisation.
Vice Admiral Matthew John Tripovich, is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy. He served as Chief Capability Development Group from 2007 until his retirement in October 2010.
Lieutenant General Brian Ashley "Ash" Power is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. Power served as Chief of Joint Operations from 2011 until his retirement in May 2014.

Rear Admiral Stephen Richard Gilmore, is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy. He served as Commander Australian Fleet from October 2009 until December 2011, and as the Head Australian Defence Staff (Washington) and Australian Defence Attaché at the Embassy of Australia, Washington, D.C. from January 2014 until his retirement in 2017.
Vice Admiral Stuart Campbell Mayer, is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy. He joined the navy via the Royal Australian Naval College at HMAS Creswell in 1984 and qualified as a Principal Warfare Officer in 1994. He commanded HMAS Canberra (2002–04), HMAS Anzac (2007–09) and the International Stabilisation Force (2009–10), and deployed on operations to the Persian Gulf, East Timor, and the Arabian Sea during the Iraq War. He served as Commander Australian Fleet from 2014 to 2018, Head Force Design within the Vice Chief of Defence Force Group from 2018 to 2019, and Deputy Commander United Nations Command, based in South Korea, from 2019 to 2021. He retired from the navy in 2022 and was appointed a partner in Ernst & Young's consulting division.
Major General Paul David McLachlan, is a retired senior Australian Army officer. He commanded the 1st Division from November 2015 to December 2018.
Air Marshal Warren George McDonald, is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He joined the RAAF as a 15-year-old apprentice and, in 1989, underwent pilot training. A series of squadron and staff postings in Australia, Canada and Malaysia followed, before he was appointed to command No. 11 Squadron (2007–09), No. 92 Wing (2009–11) and Air Mobility Group (2013–15). He was Deputy Chief of Air Force from July 2015 to May 2017 and the inaugural Chief of Joint Capabilities from July 2017 to November 2020.
Major General Roger John Noble, is the Australian Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism and a retired senior officer in the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1984 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. He has commanded the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Al Muthanna Task Group (2005) and the 3rd Brigade (2013–15), and deployed six times on operations to East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. He was seconded to the United States Army in 2016 and served as Deputy Coalition Land Force Commander, Iraq, as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, and subsequently as Deputy Commanding General – North in the United States Army Pacific (2017–19). He retired from the Australian Army and was appointed Australian Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism on 18 February 2021.
Major General Christopher Antony Field, is a senior officer in the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1984 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has commanded the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2003–05), Combined Joint Task Force 635 (2004–05) and the 3rd Brigade (2015–17), coordinated reconstruction efforts in Queensland in the wake of the 2010–11 Queensland floods and Cyclone Debbie, and deployed on operations to East Timor, Iraq, the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. He was Commander Forces Command from June 2019 to February 2020, Deputy Commanding General – Operations for United States Army Central from March 2020 to November 2021, and has been Assistant to the Chief of the Defence Force since 2022.
Major General Jeffery John Sengelman, is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Officer Cadet School, Portsea in 1980, was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and spent much of his military career in special forces. He commanded the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) (2000–01) and the 6th Brigade (2010–11), deployed on operations to East Timor and Iraq, and served as Commander Forces Command in 2011, Deputy Chief of Army from 2011 to 2012, Head of Modernisation and Strategic Planning – Army from 2012 to 2014, and Special Operations Commander Australia from 2014 until his retirement in 2017.
Major General Justin Frederick Ellwood,, commonly known as Jake Ellwood, is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1989 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He commanded the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2006–08), Overwatch Battle Group (West) (2007), Battle Group Tiger (2008) and the Combat Training Centre, and deployed on operations to Kosovo, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He served as Deputy Chief of Army from May to December 2018, and commanded the 1st Division from December 2018 to November 2021.
Major General Susan May Coyle, is a senior officer in the Australian Army. She joined the army as a reservist in 1987 and, following training at the Australian Defence Force Academy, was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals in 1992. She has commanded the 104th Signal Squadron (2003–04), 17th Signal Regiment (2009–10), Task Group Afghanistan (2015) and the 6th Combat Support Brigade (2017–19), and has deployed on operations to East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. She was appointed Commander Joint Task Force 633, with responsibility for all Australian operations in the Middle East, from January to November 2020. She was the first woman to command the task force, which had oversight for 1,200 personnel under Operation Accordion. Coyle was Head Information Warfare from January 2021 to November 2022, when she was appointed Commander Forces Command.
Major General Cheryl Ann Pearce, is a deputy commissioner in the Australian Border Force and a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. She graduated from the Officer Cadet School, Portsea and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police in 1985. She has commanded the Defence Police Training Centre (2003), 1st Military Police Battalion (2006–08), Task Group Afghanistan (2016) and Australian Defence Force Academy (2017–18), and has served on operations in East Timor and Afghanistan. She was Force Commander, United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus from January 2019 to January 2021 and, following her retirement from the Australian Army, was appointed Deputy Commissioner Ports and Enforcement in the Australian Border Force in August 2021.
Major General Natasha Anne Fox, is a senior officer in the Australian Army. She joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 1988 and has spent much of her career in logistics and training roles. She served as Commanding Officer/Chief Instructor at ADFA from 2009 to 2010, and deployed on operations to Israel, Syria and Lebanon and to Afghanistan. She was Head People Capability from November 2018 to December 2021, and assumed her current appointment as Deputy Chief of Army in February 2022. She is the first woman to serve as a deputy service chief in the Australian Defence Force.
Major General Wade Bradley Stothart, is a senior officer in the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1987 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has commanded the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2007–09), ANZAC Battle Group (2008) and Combined Team Uruzgan (2013), and deployed on operations to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Timor-Leste as part of Operations Tanager and Astute, and to Afghanistan and Kuwait. He was appointed Head People Capability in December 2021.
Air Marshal Robert Timothy Chipman, is a senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) who serves as Chief of Air Force since July 2022. He joined the RAAF as an aeronautical engineer in 1989 and gained his pilot's wings in 1994. He has commanded No. 75 Squadron RAAF (2006–09), the Air and Space Operations Centre (2010–12), No. 81 Wing RAAF (2013–14) and Air Task Unit 630.1 (2014), and deployed to the Middle East on Operations Slipper and Okra. He served as the Australian Military Representative to NATO and the European Union from 2019 to 2021 and Head Military Strategic Commitments from 2021 to 2022. He succeeded Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld as Chief of Air Force on 1 July 2022.
Rear Admiral Peter Michael Quinn is a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy. He has served as Head of Navy Capability from 2017 to 2022.
