Katy Masuga (born 1975) is an American writer.
Katy Masuga is an American writer near Paris, France. Masuga grew up in the San Bernardino National Forest of southern California. She received a B.A. in Philosophy with a Special Option in Religious Studies from Cal State East Bay in tandem with University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with a joint Ph.D. in the Program in Theory and Criticism, both from the University of Washington, Seattle. Masuga teaches for the Fall in Paris program of the Comparative Literature of Ideas Department at the University of Washington, Seattle. She was on the faculty of Skidmore College in Paris for 4.5 years (2012-2016) and held a postdoctoral teaching and research position at the New Sorbonne University (2015-2016), focusing on the intersections between literature and science. Masuga was the program coordinator for Trinity College in Paris until its dissolution in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Masuga studied philosophy and literary theory and criticism under Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, notable figure in the field, in particular on the history and philosophy of psychoanalysis, especially in regard to Le Livre noir de la psychanalyse [2] [ circular reference ] ("The Black Book of Psychoanalysis") to which he was a major contributor.
After numerous periods in Paris beginning 2001, Masuga moved permanently to France in 2010, invited by counterculture figure Jim Haynes to live at his atelier in Paris, where she regularly participated in his famous Sunday dinners, sometimes cooking for up to 100 people. He remained like family until his death in January 2021.
With Tamara Helenius, she is co-founder of Sappho Road [3] a women's knowledge exchange in English based in France.
Her brother is the folk musician Ed Masuga.
Katy Masuga is a fiction writer [4] and a scholar [5] in the field of literary modernism. She is a specialist on Henry Miller. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]
Among Masuga's publications on Miller are two books: Henry Miller and How He Got That Way (Edinburgh University Press, 2011), [13] which examines the influence of six major authors on Miller's work, [14] [15] and The Secret Violence of Henry Miller (Camden House, Boydell and Brewer, 2011), [16] which presents an in-depth analysis of Miller's subversive writing.
Masuga has written on various topics from Samuel Beckett and language games to profiles of Shakespeare and Company (bookstore) in Paris to the overlooked vegetarianism of the Creature in Frankenstein, as well as a dozen stories that blur the line between fiction and non-fiction. Her stories have appeared in various journals including Zone 3, [17] Your Impossible Voice [18] and Gloom Cupboard, [19] and multiple times as a "Letter from Paris" in The Broadkill Review. [20]
In 2017, Masuga's research group at New Sorbonne University published their findings on a project entitled "Science and Storytelling" in New Developments in ESP Teaching and Learning Research. [21]
Her debut novel, The Origin of Vermilion, was published in 2016 by Spuyten Duyvil Press, New York. [22] It has been called "a careful and complex study of language" in which "light, maps and mirrors make up [Masuga's] documented dreamscapes." [23]
Masuga undertook a book tour of the Western United States in spring/summer 2016 for the launch of The Origin of Vermilion, which includes a video-recorded reading for Lit in the Library at Seattle Central University. [24]
Masuga's writing has further been said to "mine the toxic veins of human desire, abandonment, yearning and loss found in histories that span the globe, all of which connect at their deepest points," while giving "the reader new eyes for viewing histories as stories, told by storytellers that influence the beauty, the pain and the revelations within with each turn of time and phrase." In 2016, an interview of Masuga by Hemingway scholar Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera was included in a guest-curated essay collection of Interdisciplinary Literary Studies. [26] [27] In 2018, Lingua Franca, the French-language journal of The Chronicle of Higher Education, published an interview with Masuga, again by Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera. [28]
Masuga has also published on altered books, [29] including a profile of Doug Beube in the 2018 spring issue of Book Arts arts du livre Canada, the magazine of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.
Masuga had a profile of the Henry Miller Memorial Library with Nexus: The International Henry Miller Journal in December 2018.
In 2019, Masuga served as translator and voiceover for Air France’s mindfulness and meditation collaboration with Christophe Andre based on his best-selling work Mindfulness Day after Day (L’Iconoclaste, 2011). She also served as editor and voiceover for the four-year ERCcOMICS project of the European Research Council (2016-2020) and occasionally serves as editor and voiceover for independent projects for La Bande Destinée including Sony Flow Machines, PANBioRA and the Laboratory of Computational and Quantitative Biology (LCQB) of the Sorbonne.
Her second novel, The Blue of Night, was published by Spuyten Duyvil Press in May 2020. Jillian Lauren writes, "Managing to be both heart-wrenching and hopeful, Masuga probes the very depths of what it means to be a survivor, an artist, and ultimately human." [30]

William Carlos Williams was an American poet and physician of Latin American descent closely associated with modernism and imagism. His Spring and All (1923) was written in the wake of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land (1922). In his five-volume poem Paterson (1946–1958), he took Paterson, New Jersey as "my 'case' to work up. It called for a poetry such as I did not know, it was my duty to discover or make such a context on the 'thought.'" Some of his best known poems, "This Is Just To Say" and "The Red Wheelbarrow", are reflections on the everyday. Other poems reflect the influence of the visual arts. He, in turn, influenced the visual arts; his poem "The Great Figure" inspired the painting I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold by Charles Demuth. Williams won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (1962).
Henry Valentine Miller was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist. He broke with existing literary forms and developed a new type of semi-autobiographical novel that blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, stream of consciousness, explicit language, sex, surrealist free association, and mysticism. His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, Tropic of Capricorn, and the trilogy The Rosy Crucifixion, which are based on his experiences in New York City and Paris. He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors.
Riverdale is a residential neighborhood in the northwestern portion of the New York City borough of the Bronx. Riverdale, which had a population of 47,850 as of the 2000 United States Census, contains the city's northernmost point at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Barbara Henning is an American poet and fiction writer. She is the author of eight books of poetry, four novels and a series of photo-poem pamphlets. Her recent novelized biography of her mother, Ferne, a Detroit Story, was named by the Library of Michigan as a Notable Book of 2023. She is also the editor of a collection of interviews, [Looking Up Harryette Mullen: Sleeping with the Dictionary and Other Works] and The Selected Prose of Bobbie Louise Hawkins. Her work has been published in numerous journals. Some recent books of poetry and prose are Digigram ; a novel, Just Like That ; and a conceptual project, a collection of sonnets composed from 999 passages from 999 books in her collection, entitled My Autobiography. Richard Lowell Blevins is a poet writing in the tradition of Ezra Pound, H.D., and Robert Duncan, an editor of the Charles Olson-Robert Creeley correspondence, and an award-winning teacher. He was born in Wadsworth, Ohio, in 1950. His undergraduate career was halved by the May 4, 1970, Kent State shootings. He was declared a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. At Kent State, he studied poetry and the imagination with Duncan and literature of the American West with Edward Dorn. But he has often said that Cleveland book dealer James Lowell was his most formative early influence. He holds degrees from Kent State University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Pittsburgh (Ph.D., English literature, 1985; dissertation on the western novels of Will Henry. He has taught literature and poetry writing at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg since 1978, also serving as Humanities Chair for nine years. He is a winner of a Chancellor’s Award, in 1999, the university’s highest recognition for teaching. He previously taught at the University of Akron and Kent State.
Norman Finkelstein is an American poet and literary critic. He has written extensively about modern and postmodern poetry and about Jewish American literature. According to Tablet Magazine, Finkelstein's poetry "is simultaneously secular and religious, stately and conversational, prophetic, and circumspect."

Joe Safdie is an American poet, critic, and educator. He's published seven books of poems as well as essays in journals including Jacket, Jacket 2, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, and most recently, in March 2021, Caesura. In February of 2020 he presented a paper entitled "Edward Dorn, Satire, and the Via Negativa" at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture; it was later published in Dispatches from the Poetry Wars and featured on academia.edu. While writer-in-residence at the Gloucester Writers Center in June 2016, he presented "Charles Olson and Finding One's Place," later published in the Journal of Poetics Research. He also edited the literary magazines Zephyr and Peninsula. After 28 years of teaching English at various colleges, he retired in 2019 and moved to Portland, Oregon, continuing a pattern of living in cities on the West Coast of North America including, in reverse order, Encinitas, California, Seattle, Washington, and Bolinas, California.

Thomas Sergeant La Farge was an American writer known for writing six novels and a collection of stories. He taught English at St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School and at Horace Mann School. With his wife, the writer Wendy Walker, he co-founded The Writhing Society in 2009, a salon/class devoted to the exploration and invention of constraints for verbal and visual composition. They also co-founded Proteotypes, the publishing arm of the Proteus Gowanus Gallery from 2009 to 2015. He is the son of novelist Christopher La Farge, and the father of novelist Paul La Farge.
