Kaviraj Sukon is a Mauritian academic and politician who has been a Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research since November 2024. He belongs to the Labour Party. [1] [2]
Sukon was born into the Ravived family of Beerbadre Sukon in Mauritius. He is the current president of Mauritius Arya Ravived Prtacharini Sabha (MARVPS), which is a main social and religious organization of the Mauritian Chamar Community. [3]
Kaviraj earned his Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics (1997) at the University of Mauritius after studying at the University of Loughborough in the United Kingdom. He graduated with a Distinction (first place) MBA from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom (2011). He also holds an honorary professorship at the esteemed Imperial College London, UK. [4]
Sukon is a member of the Parti Travailliste (PTr) also known as the Labour Party of Mauritius and more broadly part of the coalition Alliance du Changement (ADC). After being elected in November 2024, Sukon was appointed as the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science & Research. [5] [6]
Kaviraj founded the Open University of Mauritius (OU) in 2012 and serves as its director general. [7] He invented the two-parameter alternative group explicit (TAGE) iterative method for solving a tridiagonal linear system of equations, which is now used by other academics. From 2005 until 2011, he founded and supervised the Human Resource Formulation Council's Research and Consultancy Division, where he oversaw the formulation of Mauritius' National Human Resource Development Plan. He has also served as a consultant for UNESCO, the ILO, the UNDP, and ADEA, among other organisations. [8]
