Sub-counties, also known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions, locations and sub-locations.

Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua is a Kenyan politician who has been impeached as Deputy President of Kenya. He was impeached by the National Assembly of Kenya on 8th October 2024. He is the first Deputy President to be impeached in Kenya by the National Assembly. His fate now belongs to the Kenyan Senate after which he will know his fate if he loses the office of the deputy president. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency between 2017 and 2022 as a member of the Jubilee Party. In the 2022 election, William Ruto selected Gachagua as his running mate, and the two were elected with just over 50% of the vote.
