Kay Mazzo (born January 17, 1946) is an American former ballet dancer and educator. In 1961, she joined Jerome Robbins' company, Ballets USA. The following year, she joined the New York City Ballet and was promoted to principal dancer in 1969. She created roles for George Balanchine and Robbins, before retiring from performing in 1981. She then joined the permanent faculty of the School of American Ballet in 1983, named co-chairman of faculty in 1997 and chair of faculty in 2018. She stepped down from the position in June 2022, but continues to teach.

Early life

Mazzo was born on January 17, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. She started taking dance lessons at age six and entered the School of American Ballet in New York in 1959, when she was thirteen. [1] [2] Mazzo graduated from the Rhodes Preparatory School. [3]

Career

She joined Jerome Robbins' touring company, Ballets USA, in 1961. She was a New York City Ballet apprentice at the time, but after learning that George Balanchine decided not to cast apprentices in The Nutcracker , she auditioned for Ballet USA out of curiosity, and unbeknownst to her, the company happened to be searching for a "naive-looking" ballet dancer to perform Robbins' Afternoon of a Faun . [2] After Ballets USA disbanded, she returned to New York City Ballet in 1962. In 1964, an eighteen-year-old Mazzo danced her first lead role, in Balanchine's La Valse . [2] In 1965, she was named soloist. Whilst a soloist, she was already given principal role, including in Balanchine's Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux , Liebeslieder Walzer and Cunningham's Summerspace. [2]

Mazzo was promoted to principal dancer in 1969. The same year, she originated the role of Mauve Girl in Robbins' Dances at a Gathering . [2] Suzanne Farrell, Balanchine's muse, left the company shortly before Mazzo's promotion. Balanchine had no understudies for Farrell's role, so Mazzo was cast in these roles, and tasked with learning them quickly, including as Dulcinea in Don Quixote , "Diamonds" from Jewels , Symphony in C , Terpsichore in Apollo , Agon , Movements for Piano and Orchestra , as Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Episodes . [2] [4] [5] :275 Other roles she was cast include Donizetti Variations, divertissement in A Midsummer Night's Dream, [2] Serenade , [6] Square Dance [7] and La Sonnambula . [8]

In 1970, she created roles in Balanchine's Suite No. 3 and Robbins' In the Night . [1] The 1972 New York City Ballet Stravinsky Festival was deemed a breakthrough in Mazzo's career, [5] :275 when Balanchine made three ballets on her, Stravinsky Violin Concerto , Duo Concertant and Scherzo à la Russe . [2] With Farrell's return to New York City Ballet in 1975, roles that were danced by Mazzo for the last few years were returned to Farrell. [4] Mazzo later created three more roles for him, in Union Jack in 1976, Vienna Waltzes in 1977 and Robert Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze in 1980. [1] Mazzo retired from performing in 1981, the year her son was born, [2] as she felt that with the performance schedule, she would not have enough time with her family. [9] Prior to his death, Balanchine gave the rights to Duo Concertant to Mazzo. [5] :317

After she retired from performing, Mazzo started teaching at the School of American Ballet, at Balanchine's invitation. She joined the school's permanent faculty in 1983, and was named co-chairman of Faculty in 1997, then chair of faculty in 2018. [1] [9] At the school, she formalized the syllabus of the children's division alongside faculty member Katrina Killian, based on teachings by Elise Reiman. [9] Mazzo stepped down from the position in June 2022, but continues to teach advanced classes. [9] [10]

Personal life

In 1978, Mazzo married Albert Bellas, a businessman. [2]

The Suzanne Farrell Ballet is a ballet company housed at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., and founded in 2000 by Suzanne Farrell, one of George Balanchine's most celebrated ballerinas, and a former New York City Ballet principal dancer. Until 2017, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet was a full-fledged company produced by the Kennedy Center and had performed there since 1999 in addition to presenting extensive national and international tours. In September 2016, the Center announced that the company would be disbanding at the end of 2017, citing "possibilities of new expansion" and indicating that Farrell would likely return to "full-time teaching."

Yvonne Borree is a former principal dancer at New York City Ballet. She was raised in Norfolk, Virginia, where she began her dance studies with the Tidewater Ballet Association at four years of age.

Teresa Reichlen is an American ballet dancer. She joined the New York City Ballet in 2001, was promoted to principal dancer in 2009, and retired in 2022.

Kyra Nichols is an American retired ballet dancer and teacher. She joined the New York City Ballet in 1974 and was promoted to principal dancer in 1979. She is one of the last dancers to have worked with George Balanchine, although he did not create any new work on her. However, she originated roles in several ballets by Jerome Robbins. Nichols retired from performing in 2007, after a 33-year career.

Karin Anny Hannelore Reinbold von Aroldingen was a German ballet dancer. She danced as a soloist at the Frankfurt Opera Ballet before joining the New York City Ballet in 1962 after receiving a personal invitation from George Balanchine. She was named as one of Balanchine's main beneficiaries in his will. Von Aroldingen retired from New York City Ballet in 1984, having reached the rank of principal dancer in 1972. In her later life, she worked as a répétiteur for the Balanchine Trust, for which she was also a founder, staging his ballets for various companies.

Barbara Anne Milberg Fisher was an American academic and professional dancer. She was professor emerita of English at the City College of the City University of New York (CUNY), where she taught for 29 years. She published several works, including on the life of Wallace Stevens. Prior to her academic career, under her maiden name, Barbara Milberg, she danced with the short-lived Ballet Society, founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein; became soloist with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) in its first decade; and then joined Jerome Robbins's newly formed Ballets: USA, touring Europe and the States with that company as a principal dancer.

Natalia Magnicaballi was a principal ballet dancer with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet and Ballet Arizona.

Scherzo à la Russe is a ballet choreographed by George Balanchine to Stravinsky's music of the same name. The ballet was created for New York City Ballet's Stravinsky Festival, a tribute to the composer after his death, and premiered on June 21, 1972, at the New York State Theater, with the two lead roles originated by Karin von Aroldingen and Kay Mazzo.

Sally Harrington, known professionally as Sara Leland, was an American ballet dancer and répétiteur. She started her career with the Joffrey Ballet in 1959, and was recruited to join the New York City Ballet by George Balanchine in 1960. She was promoted to principal dancer in 1972, and created roles for both Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.

Paul Boos is an American dancer, ballet master, archivist, and répétiteur. He danced with New York City Ballet from 1977 until 1990 before becoming a guest teacher for the Royal Danish Ballet. In addition to teaching internationally, he is part of a select group of répétiteurs sanctioned by the Balanchine Trust to set the ballets of George Balanchine. Having previously served as Project Associate since 2016, in 2021, Boos was appointed to Director of the Video Archives for the George Balanchine Foundation.

Stephanie Saland is an American former ballet dancer and teacher. She was spotted by George Balanchine whilst a student at the School of American Ballet, then joined the New York City Ballet in 1972, and was promoted to principal dancer in 1984. She had created roles for both Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, before retiring in 1993. She then started teaching ballet in both the U.S. and internationally.

Margaret Tracey is an American ballet dancer and educator. She joined the New York City Ballet in 1986, was promoted principal dancer in 1991, and retired in 2002. She served as the director of the Boston Ballet School between 2007 and 2021.

Maria Calegari is an American ballet dancer, teacher and répétiteur. She joined the New York City Ballet in 1974 and became a principal dancer in 1983. She left the company in 1994, then occasionally performed until 2004. She also teaches ballet and began working as a répétiteur for the Balanchine Trust and Robbins Rights Trust in 1996 and 2003 respectively.
