Kearney Symphony Orchestra

The Kearney Symphony Orchestra is the full orchestra for Kearney, Nebraska who consist of community musicians from Central Nebraska, music instructors from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, and students from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and area high schools. [1] [2] The orchestra performs four concerts each year. The current director of the orchestra is Alison Gaines. [3]

Don Welch was an American poet and academic who was born in Hastings, Nebraska. The author of several published poetry collections and a regular contributor to literary magazines, Welch was an English literature professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney from 1959 to 1997. While there, he was awarded the Distinguished Paul W. Reynolds and Clarice Kingston Reynolds Endowed Chair in English, Poetry & Creative Writing. In June 2001, a bronze sculpture of Welch was finished and dedicated to him on the campus.

The Nebraska–Kearney Lopers are the athletic teams that represent the University of Nebraska at Kearney, located in Kearney, Nebraska, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) for most of its sports since the 2012–13 academic year; while its women's swimming and diving team competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Eugene O'Brien (born 24 April 1945) is an American composer who has been a member of the faculty at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1987. He was chair of the Composition Department from 1994 to 1999, and is currently the Executive Associate Dean. He has also been a member of the composition faculties at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Biographies and descriptions of his work are included in the New Grove Dictionary of American Music, Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, and the Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music.

Joshua Lamberson is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach for the University of Central Missouri; a position he has held since 2022. He was previously the assistant head football coach and offensive coordinator at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. Prior to taking this position on December 21, 2016, he served as the head football coach at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska. Lamberson was announced as the new head coach on December 14, 2014, replacing Darrell Morris. Before becoming head coach at UNK, Lamberson served as the offensive coordinator at Central Missouri from 2010 to 2014. He served as a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State from 2006 to 2008, and as the offensive coordinator and recruiting coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State from 2008 to 2010.

The 2016 Nebraska–Kearney Lopers football team represented the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the 2016 NCAA Division II football season. The Lopers played their home games on Foster Field in Ron & Carol Cope Stadium in Kearney, Nebraska, as they have done since 1939. 2016 was the 111th season in school history. The Lopers were led by second-year head coach, Josh Lamberson. Nebraska–Kearney has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association since 2012.

Kevin Lofton is an American college basketball coach and the current head coach of the University of Nebraska at Kearney men's basketball team. Lofton was named the Lopers’ head coach on March 24, 2015, after spending the previous 10 seasons as co-head coach alongside longtime UNK coach Tom Kropp. Lofton has coached at UNK since 1995, getting his start as a graduate assistant. In his first year as UNK's head coach, he led the Lopers to their first NCAA Tournament in nine years.

Fred Fulmer was an American football and basketball coach. He was the head football coach at Nebraska State Teachers College—now known as the University of Nebraska at Kearney–from 1922 to 1929, compiling a record of 28–31–9. He was also the head men's basketball coach from 1922 to 1930 and again from 1933 to 1935, compiling a 96–52 record.

Josh Lynn is an American college football coach and former player. He is the head football coach for West Texas A&M University; a position he has held since 2023. Lynn served as the head football coach at his alma mater, Eastern New Mexico University, from 2012 to 2016, and the University of Nebraska–Kearney from 2017 to 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Augustus O. Thomas</span>

Augustus Orloff Thomas was an American educator. Born in Mercer County, Illinois, he served as the first president of the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney (1905–1913) and a hall is named for him on campus. Leaving Nebraska, he moved east to Maine, where he was the State Superintendent of Schools from 1917 to 1929. He was preceded in this position by Payson Smith and succeeded by Bertram E. Packard. He also helped found and served in the leadership of the World Federation of Education Associations from 1925 to 1935.
