Keep Britain Untidy is the first solo album from Tom Hingley, the ex-frontman of The Inspiral Carpets. The album is his first studio album since the split of Inspiral Carpets, and marks a change in sound.

Madchester was a musical and cultural scene that developed in the English city of Manchester in the late 1980s, closely associated with the indie-dance scene. Indie-dance saw artists merging indie music with elements of acid house, rave music, psychedelia and 1960s pop. The term Madchester was coined by Factory Records' Tony Wilson, with the label popularised by the British music press in the early 1990s, and its most famous groups include the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, the Charlatans, James and 808 State. It is widely seen as being heavily influenced by drugs, especially MDMA. At that time, the Haçienda nightclub, co-owned by members of New Order, was a major catalyst for the distinctive musical ethos in the city that was called the Second Summer of Love.
Inspiral Carpets were an English rock band formed in Oldham in 1983. The band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon.

Damon Gough persuaded Tom that you've just got to follow that gut instinct and go for what you believe in. After the release of the critically acclaimed solo acoustic 2000 album, Keep Britain Untidy, this return to a full band rock album allowed a base to build on and showed off the voice that had been hidden amongst the Inspiral's trademark organ sound.

The album is their first in 20 years; and the first album in the band's history to feature founding vocalist Stephen Holt, who replaced Tom Hingley following Hingley's departure from the band. It is also the band's final album with drummer Craig Gill, before his death in 2016.
