Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer;it develops from the melanin-producing cells known as melanocytes. It typically occurs in the skin,but may rarely occur in the mouth,intestines,or eye. In women,melanomas most commonly occur on the legs;while in men,on the back. Melanoma is frequently referred to as malignant melanoma. However,the medical community stresses that there is no such thing as a 'benign melanoma' and recommends that the term 'malignant melanoma' should be avoided as redundant.
Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is a cancer research and treatment center located in Buffalo,New York. Founded by surgeon Roswell Park in 1898,the center was the first in the United States to specifically focus on cancer research. The center is usually called Roswell Park in short. The center,which conducts clinical research on cancer as well as the development new drugs,provides advanced treatment for all forms of adult and pediatric cancer,and serves as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is as of 2019,the only upstate New York facility to hold the National Cancer Institute designation of "comprehensive cancer center".
The sentinel lymph node is the hypothetical first lymph node or group of nodes draining a cancer. In case of established cancerous dissemination it is postulated that the sentinel lymph nodes are the target organs primarily reached by metastasizing cancer cells from the tumor.
Hiram C. Polk Jr. is native of Jackson,Mississippi and alumnus of Millsaps College and the Harvard Medical School. He served as the Ben A. Reid Professor and Chairman of Surgery at the University of Louisville from 1971–2005. Polk trained in Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis and was a fellow at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London before receiving an academic appointment at the University of Miami and later becoming a full professor and director of pediatric surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. In 1971,at the relatively young age of 35,he was recruited to the University of Louisville as Chairman of Surgery and oversaw the development of the department into a well-respected center for research and surgical education. Upon his stepping down as chairman,the University of Louisville department of surgery was re-dedicated as the Hiram C. Polk Department of Surgery and an endowed chair was established in his name. Noted advances that occurred by the division under his chairmanship include the development and first implantation of the Abiocore artificial heart and the organization of one of the world's first hand transplant programs. While Chairman at Louisville,Polk trained more than 230 surgical residents,all of whom hold board certification in general surgery. Some of the surgical residents have become academic surgery chairmen at medical schools in the United States.
Robert Lee "Bobby" Satcher Jr. is an American orthopedic surgeon,chemical engineer,and former NASA astronaut. He participated in two spacewalks during STS-129,accumulating 12 hours and 19 minutes of extravehicular activity. Satcher holds two doctorates and has received numerous awards and honors as a surgeon and engineer.
Jonathan W. Simons is an American physician-scientist,medical oncologist,and leader in prostate cancer research. In August 2021,Simons was appointed the medical director and Chief Science Officer of the Marcus Foundation. Prior to joining the Marcus Foundation,he served a 14-year tenure as the President and chief executive officer of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Simons’laboratories,partly funded by the Prostate Cancer Foundation,at Johns Hopkins University and Emory University made original contributions to understanding the molecular biology of prostate cancer metastasis and principles of “broken immune tolerance”via T cell based immunotherapy for prostate cancer. The Simons lab invented GM-CSF genetically engineered vaccines for prostate cancer in rodents and humans for these studies,and subsequently Simons’clinical team took the biotechnology into the world’s first human gene therapy clinical trials for advanced prostate cancer at Johns Hopkins.
David J. Leffell, MD,was born in 1956 in Montreal,Canada and educated at Yale. Leffell is an internationally recognized expert in skin cancer and the Mohs technique,plastic reconstruction,and new technologies in dermatology. He specializes in the diagnosis,treatment,and prevention of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer. He is the David Paige Smith Professor of Dermatology and Surgery,chief of Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology,and former Deputy Dean for Clinical Affairs at Yale University School of Medicine. In January 2012,Dr. Leffell stepped down as chief executive officer of the Yale Medical Group,after 15 years of leadership of the organization. He serves on the board of Validus Pharmaceuticals and is a trustee of The Hopkins School,one of America's oldest independent schools.

Since 1990. he has served as Symposium Director of the Cleveland Clinic Annual International Colorectal Disease Symposium. The Symposium was held in Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton every year from 1990 to 2019. Since 2020,the Symposium has expanded to include host locations outside of the US with interruptions during the pandemic years of 2021–2022.
Sarah Coupland is an Australian-born pathologist and professor who is the George Holt Chair in Pathology at the University of Liverpool. Coupland is an active clinical scientist whose research focuses on the molecular genetics of cancers,with particular interests in uveal melanoma,conjunctival melanoma,intraocular and ocular adnexal lymphomas and CNS lymphoma. Coupland is also an NHS Honorary Consultant Histopathologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Since 2006,Coupland has been head of the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Research Group;from which she runs a multidisciplinary oncology research group focussing on Uveal melanoma,based in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Her research laboratory is currently located in the Institute of Translational Medicine From April 2014 to December 2019,Coupland was also Director of the North West Cancer Research Centre,@UoL. In both 2019 and 2020,Coupland was included on the 'Pathology Powerlist' on The Pathologist website.
