Kelly Sutherland,nicknamed "The King", [1] (born October 29,1951) is a professional rodeo competitor in chuckwagon racing. He is a 12-time world champion of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association and 12-time winner at the Calgary Stampede. [2]
Sutherland is from Grande Prairie,Alberta. [2] Chuckwagon racing is a family affair. Sutherland was inspired by his father,who was an amateur racer and other members of the family who competed. [3]
He has been competing in chuckwagon racing since 1967. [2] Sutherland was 14 when he started racing. He was 22 when he won his first race. He can recall being on stage for the first time for an audience of 40,000. "When you're in the sport,you only dream about getting the opportunity to win and I was fortunate when I was young." [4]
He was an outrider for the first year,then began driving in 1968. His rookie season in the WPCA was 1969. [2] He competed in the 2016 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby. [5] [6] In 2010,Sutherland won the chuckwagon championship for the 11th time,breaking the world record. He was almost 60 years old when he won his final and 12th world championship. He also has a dozen championships from the Calgary Stampede,nine championships from the Ponoka Stampede,and one from his hometown of Grande Prairie. [4] He won his 12th and final world championship not long before his birthday in 2017. The year 2017 was his last year competing,as the event has a mandatory retirement age of 65. [6] Sutherland competed in his last race in Rocky Mountain House in west central Alberta. Sutherland spent 50 years guiding horses around the track. [4]
Sutherland owned a country bar in Canada in the 1980s,called Kelly's Bar at the Sutherland Inn,in Clairmont,Alberta. [9] His first Chuckwagon hung from the ceiling above the dance floor.[ citation needed ] Sutherland's wife Debbie has been riding with him ever since he began racing competitively. [3]
In 2009,Sutherland participated in the 2010 Winter Olympics as one of 13 torchbearers for his home town of Grande Prairie,Alberta. Each of the torchbearers rode down the main street of the town for the one-kilometre ride with the torch. He revealed that he will put the used torch on display with his 38 chuckwagon trophies. [10]

The ten-day event,which bills itself as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth",attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world's largest rodeos,a parade,midway,stage shows,concerts,agricultural competitions,chuckwagon racing,and First Nations exhibitions. In 2008,the Calgary Stampede was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

Peter Charles Knight was a Canadian and World Champion Rodeo Bronc Rider. Knight was the acclaimed "King of the Cowboys" of the 1930s,and held the Rodeo Association of America title "World Champion Bronc Rider" for 1932,1933,1935,and 1936. The Rodeo Hall of Fame in the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum inducted Knight in 1958. The Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame inducted Pete in 1998. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs,Colorado,inducted Knight in the Saddle Bronc Riding category when it opened its doors in 1979.
A chuckwagon is a type of field kitchen covered wagon historically used for the storage and transportation of food and cooking equipment on the prairies of the United States and Canada. Such wagons formed part of a wagon train of settlers or fed traveling workers such as cowboys or loggers.
George Guy Weadick was an American cowboy,performer and promoter. Today,he is best known as the founder of the Calgary Stampede in Alberta,Canada. He was married to famed cowgirl,Florence LaDue. Weadick was the first to be inducted in the Builder category in the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Michelle Kelly is a Canadian former skeleton racer who competed from 1994 to 2013. A two-time Olympian,Kelly is largely considered to be one of the pioneers of the sport of Women's Skeleton. Originally an elite gymnast,she was recruited for her explosive power to the Canadian Women's National Bobsleigh Team as a brakeman,competing from 1994 to 1999. In 1995 Kelly started sliding Skeleton and competing in both sports. When Women's Skeleton and Bobsled were both named to make their debut at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City,Kelly chose Skeleton. She finished 10th at those 2002 Games,and went on to earn the Olympic alternate position at the 2006 Torino Olympics,and another Olympic birth at the 2010 Winter Olympics,finishing 13th. Kelly won a complete set of medals at the FIBT World Championships with a gold in 2003,a silver in 2008,and a bronze in 2005,as well as taking the women's Skeleton World Cup overall title in 2002-3.
Dave Ruhl was a Canadian professional wrestler who during his near 30-year career competed in North American regional promotions in Western Canada and the Canadian Prairies as well as in Japan and other international promotions. A longtime mainstay of Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling during the 1960s and early 70s,he engaged in memorable feuds with Sweet Daddy Siki and The Stomper over the Stampede North American Heavyweight Championship.
The World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) is an association made up of professional cowboys and business people with an interest in preserving western heritage and providing family entertainment. The WPCA promotes and presents chuckwagon racing as a professional sport throughout North America and the world. The WPCA is a close-knit community that mentors its new drivers in safety and professionalism to preserve the integrity of the WPCA and chuckwagon racing in general.
Reg Kesler began his rodeo career at the age of 14 at the Raymond Stampede,competing in the boys steer riding. At the time,it was common for cowboys to compete in many or even all the rodeo events,and Kesler was no exception as he grew into his rodeo career. He participated in all five major rodeo events of the time:saddle bronc riding,bareback riding,bull riding,tie-down roping and steer decorating,a precursor to steer wrestling. Kesler especially excelled in the roughstock events,namely saddle bronc riding and bareback riding,appearing in the top four in the Canadian standings in those events six times. He was also a successful competitor in the wild cow milking and wild horse racing,an outrider in the chuckwagon racing,and a well-known pick-up man. Kesler was a ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee.

Rick Fraser is a Canadian professional chuckwagon racer. He is a two-time World Champion Chuckwagon Driver,a six-time Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion Outrider,and has won 20 show titles in 21 years of competing on the WPCA Pro Tour.
The Grande Prairie Stompede is an agricultural event held typically at the end of May every year at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie,Alberta. Recent years have seen as many as 50,000 people attending during the 5 days of Stompede. Events held at Stompede include:Rodeo,Pony Chuckwagon Racing,thoroughbred Chuckwagon Racing and usually a midway.
Chad Harden is a Canadian professional chuckwagon racer. He has won the three richest shows in chuckwagon racing:the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby,Edmonton's Chuckwagon Derby,and the Ponoka Stampede.
Troy Dorchester is a Canadian professional chuckwagon racer. He is the only chuckwagon driver to have won chuckwagon racing's "Triple Crown" consisting of the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby,the Calgary Stampede Aggregate Title and the Ponoka Stampede in a single year. He accomplished the feat in 2012.
Jerry Bremner is a Canadian professional chuckwagon racer. He is a three-time World Champion Chuckwagon Driver and was the 1986 World Champion Outrider.

Mary Burger is an American professional rodeo cowgirl who specializes in barrel racing. She has won two Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) barrel racing world championships in 2006 and 2016. Burger was 68 years old when she won the championship in 2016,setting a new record for oldest professional rodeo world champion in any rodeo event,male or female. She broke the existing record set by Ike Rude of 59 years old in steer roping set back in 1953. She also broke the record set by Mary Walker in 2012 at 53 years old. Also In 2016,she became the third WPRA barrel racer to wear the No. 1 back number at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). She set a new record for season earnings,and she set a new record by becoming the oldest WPRA qualifier to the NFR at 68 years old. Her horses,Mo and Fred,whom she used to win her titles with,she trained in barrel racing herself. In 2017,she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.
Lisa Lockhart is an American professional rodeo cowgirl who specializes in barrel racing. In December 2014 and 2016,she won the Average at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas,Nevada.
Isabella Miller was a Canadian rodeo cowgirl,rancher and horse trainer. She was the Canadian barrel racing Champion in 1960 and 1969 and was a 5-time winner of the Canadian All-Around women's title. She was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2005.
Sutherland doesn't have many more shots to win another title before he turns 65, after which time he's no longer eligible to compete in the Rangeland Derby.
