Kemal Bedri is an Ethiopian judge. He served as the founding chairman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) and later President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia until 2009. [1] [2]
Kemal was born in the city of Harar. He received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Addis Ababa University in 1973. During the Derg regime,he was appointed judge and was involved in various judiciary roles. [3]
Following the collapse of the Derg in 1991,the new transitional government of Ethiopia nominated him as the chairman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia. [4] In 1996 he would leave his position as head of NEBE to become President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia. [5]
He was an adherent of the now defunct Harari National League. [6]
The government of Ethiopia is the federal government of Ethiopia. It is structured in a framework of a federal parliamentary republic,whereby the prime minister is the head of government. Executive power is exercised by the government. The prime minister is chosen by the lower chamber of the Federal Parliamentary Assembly. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament. The judiciary is more or less independent of the executive and the legislature. They are governed under the 1995 Constitution of Ethiopia. There is a bicameral parliament made of the 108-seat House of Federation and the 547-seat House of Peoples' Representatives. The House of Federation has members chosen by the regional councils to serve five-year terms. The House of Peoples' Representatives is elected by direct election,who in turn elect the president for a six-year term.
Berhanu Bayeh is an Ethiopian former military officer and politician. He was the Foreign Minister of Ethiopia during the Derg regime from 1986 to 1989. Prior to that,he was chairman of the Derg's committee for legal affairs. Bayeh was a refugee resident of the Italian Embassy from May 1991 until December 2020,when he left the Embassy.
The Derg,officially the Provisional Military Administrative Council (PMAC),was the military dictatorship that ruled Ethiopia,then including present-day Eritrea,from 1974 to 1987,when the military leadership or junta formally "civilianized" the administration but stayed in power until 1991.
The Tigray People's Liberation Front,also known as the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front,is a left-wing ethnic nationalist,paramilitary group,and the former ruling party of Ethiopia. It was classified as a terrorist organization by the Ethiopian government during the Tigray War until its removal from the list in 2023. Under the current constitution,Ethiopia conducts local,regional,and federal elections. At the federal level,Ethiopia elects a legislature. The Federal Parliamentary Assembly has two chambers:the House of People's Representatives with not more than 550 members as per the constitution but actually nearly 547 members,elected for five-year terms in single-seat constituencies;and the Council of the Federation with 117 members,one each from the 22 minority nationalities,and one from each professional sector of its remaining nationalities,designated by the regional councils,which may elect them themselves or through popular elections.
General elections were held in Ethiopia on 15 May 2005,for seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives and four regional government councils. Under pressure from the international community,Prime Minister Meles Zenawi promised that this election would be proof that more democracy would come in this multi-ethnic nation;international elections observers from the European Union (EU) and the U.S.-based Carter Center were present to observe the results. This election succeeded in attracting about 90% of the registered voters to the polls. A government ban on protests was imposed throughout the election period.
The Coalition for Unity and Democracy,commonly referred to by its English abbreviation CUD,or occasionally CDU,was a coalition of four existing political parties of Ethiopia which combined to compete for seats in the Ethiopian General Elections held on May 15,2005,and around the end of that year,became a full-fledged political party. Its leader was Hailu Shawul and the political party was dissolved in 2007.

Siye Abraha Hagos (also Seeye Abraha Hagos) (Tigrinya:ስዬአብርሃሓጐስ,siyәabräha;born 12 June 1955) is an Ethiopian politician who served as Ethiopian Minister of Defense from 1991 to 1995. He was a top official of Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front executive committees until 2002. Since 2013,he has been working as Security Sector Reform Advisor for United Nations Development Programme in Liberia.
Birtukan Mideksa is an Ethiopian politician and former judge who has served as chairwoman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) from 2018 to 2023. She was the founder and leader of the opposition Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party from 2008 to 2010.

Debretsion Gebremichael is an Ethiopian politician serving as the chairman of Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). He was previously the president of the Tigray Region. His position as titular head of the Tigray Region was disputed by the federal government of Ethiopia who in November 2020 appointed Mulu Nega as the chief executive of the Transitional Government of Tigray,succeeded by Abraham Belay. From July 2021 to March 2023,Debretsion again led the Tigray Region,while Abraham Belay left the transitional government to become Ethiopia's minister of Defence.
Meaza Ashenafi is an Ethiopian lawyer. In November 2018,she was appointed by the Federal Parliamentary Assembly as President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia until her resignation on 17 January 2023.
The Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia is the highest court in Ethiopia. It was established by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia constitution in 1994 and is currently located in Addis Ababa. Article 78 of the Constitution establishes the judiciary and at the top is the FSC. By the Constitution,the Federal Supreme Court has "the power of cassation over any final court decision containing a basic error of law". In 2018,Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Meaza Ashenafi to be the first female president of the Federal Supreme Court. Solomon Areda Waktolla was appointed as Vice President of the Federal Supreme Court. Both were resigned by the Parliament on 17 January 2023,and replaced by Tewodros Mihret and Abeba Embiale as Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court respectively.
Solomon Areda Waktolla is an Ethiopian lawyer who had served as the Deputy Chief Justice/Vice President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia from 2018 to 2023. Solomon is a prominent lawyer with 25 years of experience in the practice of law,public administration and policy research who is committed for seeing a free and independent judiciary in Ethiopia. Justice Waktolla served in the Ethiopian Judiciary mainly as a judge for 20 years on different levels of the court in both regional and federal positions. In addition,he has been appointed to the membership of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at The Hague,Netherlands for a six-year term to serve as an Arbitrator. Justice Solomon Waktolla was appointed on 15 November 2022 by the UN General Assembly as a Half-time Judge of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal for a mandate starting on 1 July 2023 and ending on 30 June 2030. In addition,He has been appointed by the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank as a Judge of the Administrative Tribunal of the African Development Bank,effective from November 2023. Justice Waktolla is an accomplished judge and jurist with many years of legal and judicial work experience at both national and international levels.

Since the new constitution of Ethiopia enacted in 1995,Ethiopia's legal system consisted of federal law with bicameral legislature. The House of People's Representatives (HoPR) is the lower chamber of bicameral legislature of Federal Parliamentary Assembly with 547 seats and the House of Federation with 108 seats,the former vested on executive power of Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers,and the latter have authority to interpret federal law and oversees regional and federal decisions.
On 12 December 2006,the Federal Supreme Court found guilty 77 top Derg officials accused by the government of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) over the Red Terror (1976–1978). The head of the Derg,Mengistu Haile Mariam,who fled to Zimbabwe,and other 22 Derg members were sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment on 11 January 2007.
