Ken Friedman is a restaurateur.
Before becoming a restaurateur, Friedman worked for twenty years in the music industry including time as an executive at Arista Records. [1] He worked in A&R.
In 2016, he was named outstanding restaurateur of the year by the James Beard Foundation. His partnership with chef April Bloomfield is one of the reasons he was “one of the nation’s top restaurateurs.” Notable for The Spotted Pig, they also owned The John Dory Oyster Bar, Breslin Bar & Dining Room, salvation Taco and White Gold Butchers, [2] Friedman was also involved with the creation of the restaurant Horses in Los Angeles, where he helped get the initial lease, despite the fact he “is not listed on the lease, the restaurant’s opening operating agreement, or the operating agreement for the LLC that now oversees the restaurant.” [3]
While at The Spotted Pig with Mario Batali in 2017, Friedman was accused of sexual harassment. The third floor of the restaurant was reportedly nicknamed "the rape room" among employees. [2]
In 2020, he agreed to pay 11 former employees $240,000 and a share of profits. [4] After he decided to “step away” from the Spotted Pig, they closed about three weeks after the settlement. [5] He was expected to pay 20% of the profits. [6]
Liz Johnson (chef/owner), partner Aghajanian and Stephen Light acknowledge his initial assistance with Horses but deny current involvement saying he “is in no way involved with Horses as an owner, partner, or previous investor.”. [3] Friedman claims to be a profit sharing owner and silent partner. [7]
Bloomfield and Friedman also owned restaurants in California such as Hearth & Hound in LA and Tosca in San Francisco. [8] The Tosca chef and business manager tried to buy Tosca after the allegations were made against Friedman. The purchase fell through and the pair left in the spring of 2018. [9]
Mario Francesco Batali is an American chef, writer, and former restaurateur. Batali co-owned restaurants in New York City; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Newport Beach, California; Boston; Singapore; Westport, Connecticut; and New Haven, Connecticut including Babbo (restaurant) in New York City which received a Michelin star for several years. Batali has appeared on the Food Network, on shows such as Molto Mario and Iron Chef America, on which he was one of the featured "Iron Chefs". In 2017, the restaurant review site Eater revealed multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Batali and, in March 2019, he sold all his restaurant holdings.
Thomas Aloysius Keller is an American chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author. He and his landmark Napa Valley restaurant, The French Laundry in Yountville, California, have won multiple awards from the James Beard Foundation, notably the Best California Chef in 1996, and the Best Chef in America in 1997. The restaurant was a perennial winner in the annual Restaurant list of the Top 50 Restaurants of the World; the voting process has since been changed to disallow previous winners from being considered.
Michael Dominic Chiarello was an American celebrity chef, restauranteur, and businessperson, who was known for Italian-influenced California cuisine. He hosted the cooking TV shows Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello on Food Network, and NapaStyle on Fine Living Network. He was the owner of a tapas restaurant named Coqueta and an Italian restaurant named Bottega and has locations in Napa Valley, California and San Francisco, California. He was a competitor on the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef.
Kim Marie Severson is a reporter for The New York Times. She won a Pulitzer Prize for public service in 2018 as part of The New York Times coverage of sexual harassment and abuse and is a four-time James Beard award–winner for food writing. Severson has published multiple cookbooks and a cooking themed memoir.

Earlier that same year, they teamed up with businessman Oscar Farinetti to bring Eataly, an upscale food and wine market, to Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, London and Stockholm.
The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented by the James Beard Foundation to recognize chefs, restaurateurs, authors and journalists in the United States. They are scheduled around James Beard's May 5 birthday. The media awards are presented at a dinner in New York City; the chef and restaurant awards were also presented in New York until 2015, when the foundation's annual gala moved to Chicago. Chicago will continue to host the Awards until 2027.

The Spotted Pig was a gastropub located at 314 West 11th Street in the West Village in Manhattan in New York City. The 100-seat gastropub was owned by Ken Friedman. Mario Batali was a primary investor. The chef was April Bloomfield, a British expatriate celebrity chef who was hired after flying to New York and interviewing with Mario Batali and Friedman. The restaurant held a single Michelin Star from about 2006 to 2016. The restaurant closed on January 26, 2020.

Since 2019, Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson have been the owners, having bought Le Veau d'Or from Catherine Treboux, the daughter of the longtime owner, Robert Treboux, who bought the restaurant in 1985 and died in 2012.
