Kenneth Karmiole is an American bookseller and philanthropist. He is President of Kenneth Karmiole, Bookseller, Inc., located in Santa Monica, California, established in 1976, an antiquarian bookselling firm specializing in early printed books and manuscripts. [1]

Early life and education

Karmiole attended the University of California, Santa Barbara as an undergrad and graduated in 1968 with a bachelor of arts in American studies. [2] [3] He later attended and received an MLS degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. [2]

Career and philanthropy

Karmiole provides financial support to various libraries and educational programs in Southern California; he has established endowment funds at UCLA and at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). One UCSB endowment is for the purchase of rare books, and a second endowment for an annual research fellowship at the UCSB Library started in 2018. [4] [5] The endowments at UCLA include an annual lecture series on the History of the Book Trade at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, [6] which began in 2005 with a presentation by Professor Robert Darnton; also, there is an endowed annual research fellowship at the Clark Library. [7] Karmiole is responsible for an endowment for the purchase of rare books & manuscripts at the discretion of the UCLA University Librarian; [8] and endowments for financial aid to students in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. [9] [10] An endowment for Archival Studies programs and speakers at the UCLA GSE & IS was established in 2013. [11] Professor Heather MacNeil of the University of Toronto was the first lecturer. [12] Another endowment, begun in 2015, is the Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Research Fellowship at the UCLA Library. The individual awarded this endowment will present a public lecture upon the completion of their research. [13] In 2016, an endowment was created at The Book Club of California, [14] the Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Lecture on the History of the Book Trade in California and the West. The annual lecture will be held in the fall of each year, and will be presented in both San Francisco and in Southern California.

Professional associations and honors

Karmiole currently serves on the advisory committees of the California Rare Book School, [15] the UCLA Research Library Board of Visitors, [16] [17] and the Library Council at UCSB. He is a member of the Director’s Advisory Council of the William Andrews Clark Library and of the Board of Visitors of the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. [18] Since the 1970s Karmiole has served three terms on the National Board of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America. [19] He was the president of the Southern California Chapter of the ABAA in 2012 and 2013. In 2015, he was elected a Director of The Book Club of California and serves as the Co-Chair of the Membership and Development Committee. [20] In 2018, he was elected a Director of the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. [21] He has presented two public lectures at the Rare Book School, one in 2015, "The Abbey Press", [22] and the second in 2019, "Shakespeare in Virginia". [23] In 2021, the inaugural lecture in the newly established "Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Annual Lecture on the Book Trades" will be presented at the Rare Book School in Virginia. [24]

Karmiole received the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2011 from the UCLA Library and Information Studies Alumni Association. [25] His article about collecting books in the digital age appeared in The Journal of the Book Club of Washington. [26]

Most of the courses are offered at its headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia but others are held in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. Its courses are intended for teaching academics, archivists, antiquarian booksellers, book collectors, conservators and bookbinders, rare book and special collections librarians, and others with an interest in book history.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">William Andrews Clark Memorial Library</span> UCLA-associated library of rare books and manuscripts

The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, an affiliated library of the University of California, Los Angeles, holds rare books and manuscripts with particular strengths in English literature and history (1641–1800), Oscar Wilde and the fin de siècle, and fine press printing. It is located about 10 mi (16 km) southeast from UCLA, in the West Adams district of Los Angeles, and 2 mi (3.2 km) west of the University of Southern California. It is administered by UCLA's Center for Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Studies, which offers several long- and short-term fellowships for graduate and postdoctoral scholars to use the Library's collections. However, any reader with an interest in the collection is welcome to study.

The Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America (ABAA) is an organization in the United States for dealers in rare and antiquarian books. The association is a member of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).

The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers is a non-profit umbrella organization of bookseller associations, with its legal location in Geneva, Switzerland. It federates 22 National Associations of Antiquarian Booksellers, representing nearly 2000 dealers in 32 countries. Antiquarian booksellers affiliated to the League adhere to the ILAB Code of Ethics, and the League aims to server as a global network for the rare book trade.

Terry Belanger is the founding director of Rare Book School (RBS), an institute concerned with education for the history of books and printing, and with rare books and special collections librarianship. He is University Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia (UVa), where RBS has its home base. Between 1972 and 1992, he devised and ran a master's program for the training of rare book librarians and antiquarian booksellers at the Columbia University School of Library Service. He is a 2005 MacArthur Fellow.

Manoochehr Sadeghi is a Persian-American naturalized citizen, born in Tehran, Iran. He is considered a Grandmaster or Ostad of the santur, a Persian hammered dulcimer. The Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies (FABS) is an association of American book clubs whose members seek interaction with book collectors across the country and around the world. At The Rowfant Club's 100th anniversary celebration in 1992, local members and their guests from book clubs in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco discovered common interests of bibliophilic book clubs. The new association's first meeting was November 5, 1993, in New York, at The Grolier Club. In 1994, the group drew up articles of association outlining their goals to promote and develop common interests of the member societies.

Justin Galland Schiller is an American bookseller specializing in rare and collectible children's books; proprietor during his student days under his own name (1960-1969), then Justin G. Schiller, Ltd. (1969–2020). Headquartered in New York City, it was the oldest specialist firm in the United States, focusing on historical and collectible children's books, related original art, and manuscripts. In 1988, he formed a second corporation—Battledore Ltd, with his partner and spouse Dennis M V David, to further specialize in original children's book illustration art and the legacy of Maurice Sendak.
